today i pulled the bumper off the new RS to start taking some looks and measurements for the toyota axle that will soon be going under it. my plan all along was to just buy a front hanger from allpro or sky-manufacturing, but my question is if i do that will it be pushed out far enough? does anyone with a sas on a first gen have pics of how they mounted there front hanger? i'm planning on reverse shackle with either toyota rear springs or waggys.
Thanks

Eric, if you're planning on welding the allpro hanger right up under the frame rails, then no, it probably won't move you as far forward as you would like. You'll either have to extend the frame rails or design your own custom hanger like many of us have done that move the spring eye way out in front.

I have some similar/related bumper and front mount pictures online from the late 90's when I did UZI's front axle swap:

Those are the easiest ones to get to, but there are many similar threads out there available for search.

I searched on "solid axle swap" and also "SAS" and came up with some good old discussions. Here are a few of the threads that result:

Linky 3

Feel free to ask specific questions and I'll try to pitch in where I can, as will the rest of the SAS community, I bet...

Hope that helps,

Thanks for the pics guys.

Randi, did you make the double steering arm? thats the kind of steering set up i was wanting to do but wasn't sure if i should buy the double arm from all pro or have a machine shop make it. also are you running the ford TRE in the pitman arm?

Back to the hanger, randi your hanger looked pretty simple, just welded extentions under the frame. are you still running that set up? ok one more question did you mount your shackle on that random piece of metal that hangs down from the frame, or is that a different piece that you welded on?
Thanks again for the help

I did not make the double steering arm myself... I don't trust my welding skills to that. I contracted it done to my specs.

There's a steerig thread around here that I'll try to dig up that details some of the issues of using mass-produced arms with the shorty Isuzu pitman arm... in a nutshell, I elected to use the Isuzu pitman stock and have a custom-length double-arm built. The other choices are to have a custom pitman built to work with an easily available steering arm, or to go ahead and mismatch a stock Isuzu pitman to an easily available steering arm and cope with the resultant issues.

I initially ran a spherical-rod end (SRE )at both ends of my drag link, but was unhappy with the longevity of that solution, so I dug through a few chassis fixture books and crossreferenced the various dimensions to find a stock tie rod end (TRE) that would work with the stock Isuzu pitman arm hole and taper. That bore fruit in the '72 Ford stock TRE that many folks have used with good success since then. I'm kinda proud of that, since many people told me that it couldn't be done. (I respond to that sort of challenge with almost as much joy as when someone says "that SHOULDN'T be done!)

I'm still running the original frame extensions/spring hangars that are shown in those pictures... they are 2.5" OD (2" ID) square receiver stock, that I also use to support my removable front winch. In the rear, I fabbed two solid blocks of steel and had them bored to match the OD of the shackle bushings I wanted to use, and then tacked them to the frame (as noted above, for safety-critical welds, I'll align and tack components in place, but I'll pay someone else for the peace of mind inherent in GREAT welds).

Body Damage is Cool
Eric, I have a bare Trooper frame. Well, almost, the main part of the body comes off this week end. If it'll help I'll send you some pictures of what's up there to build on with all the sheet metal out of the way. May help help you get a better idea of the overall picture.

are you trying to keep the stock wheelbase? why not build a frame extension like matt's RS? also, theres a thread somewhere on pirate in the toy section that shows how to do a homemade crossover setup.

Curtis, that would be great if you could post some pics of how you make your hanger. are you extending the frame or just making the hanger stick out a little further.

Paul, i'm not really trying to keep the stock wheel base, but i'm not looking to extend it out to far. its mainly for simplicity to be able to just weld a prefabbed hanger on and go from there. i would like to have the axle pushed about maybe 5in forward. i'm planning on using yota rear springs which are offset so that should move it forward a few inchs with just that. i'll probably move the rear axle back about an inch as well, hopefully going from a 90in wheel base to around 95-97.

we just got the front hanger done on the 87, come check it out next time you're up here. i've got all the correct steel on hand to make another hanger, toss me some cash for whatever steel you need and we can make one. got a drill press now too, so spring holes are a breeze. ours is 2x4 directly off the front frame crossmember, 3x3 box with one side cut off for the actual spring pockets, and will have 3/8" plating from the hanger to the frame/crossmember and bracing up to the stock bumper mounts as well. we're running stock dodge rear shackles, so we'll be able to switch the shackles front to rear at will if we want a different setup, pinion angle, whatever... 3 holes are drilled in the spring mounts and the shackle mount (like RobG's) so we will have quite a bit of adjustment for shackle angle, moving the axle foward/backward, and even different length springs (within reason).
