98 Tacoma Will Not Start Without Pushing the Clutch Cancel Button??? #510530

Hello,

I hope I can get some feedback from my fellow Tacoma Owners out there?

I have a 1998 Toyota Tacoma SR5 V-6 X-tra Cab Manual. The truck has about 150,000 miles on it.

A month ago I went to start the truck & there was nothing....I have power as far as the radio turns on with the key etc. but nothing as far as the truck starting?

I was clueless on what was going on so I just pushed the Clutch/Cancel button out of pure rage & Vroooom!!! Truck started right up like nothing happened. Now this is the only way I can start the truck.....???

Any Ideas on what is going on? I ripped the entire dash apart, checked all the wires & fuses & everything looks OK?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Regards,

Just a thought but it could be a bad neutral safety switch. The truck might think it is in gear and therefore won't let you start it without pushing in the clutch cancel button.

Could you tell me where this would be located so I can check?

Thanks!

To be honest I am not sure. It is mounted on the transmission usually near the shifter. I will take a look at mine when I get home. I think they are very similiar.....anyone else know?

I do know that it reads open circuit and closed circuit depending on if you are in neutral or in gear. If you find it test it with a multimeter. You may even be able to ground the wire (if only one) to the trans and try and start the truck. If this works than the neutral saftey switch is bad. (these are generic instruction, not completely sure about your application)

ok thought about this more and it may be the clutch switch at the pedal also. (makes sense - you can start your truck in gear as long as the clutch is depressed!) Hopefully, I can get you some instructions for checking tonight.

2nd vote for this switch being the culprit. Easy check with an ohm meter. Key off, read across the two connectors on the switch with the pedal up. Should be infinity (no reading). Remeasure with the clutch pedal to the floor (you might need a third or fourth hand for this one), key still off, should read close to zero ohms if the switch is good. If it still reads infinity then the switch is bad. If that's the case, just buy a new switch and replace it. Don't just cut it out of the circuit like my trucks previous owner did

Guys, you are dead on the money with the clutch pedal switch. It is either bad, stuck, or needs adjusted.

my truck does the same thing, bet you that the wire to the clutch switch under the pedal has come un-done, its happened in mine a bunch of times...

i figure if anyone tries to steal it they wont be able to figure it out.... not too many vehicles have a clutch cancel switch..

not really sure what the point of it is anyways.

O.K.I'll clear up the mystery of the clutch cancel switch. If you 4 wheel in steep areas you may find your self in a fix if you kill the truck and can't afford to let it roll back or forward while the clutch is pushed in to restart the truck. So you hit the clutch camcel switch and start the truck with the clutch engaged (pedal up). The truck will actually roll in the direction you want it to as it starts up. This has kept me off a tree or two through the years.
