If you're gonna swap axles, go with an IFS 86-95 rear axle. It is 3" wider, and has larger brake drums.

That's cool, like the 3" wider and bigger brakes.
Factory axle Gear ratios.
What years, what ratios, manual vs auto?
What years will work together, front and rear?

factory ratios are as follows:
'79-80 - 4.375
'81 - 3.90

'82-up base model with 5 speed - 4.10
base model auto - 4.30
5 speed with 31" tire package - 4.56
auto with v6 and 31" tire package - 4.88

just make sure you get both ratios the same in the front and rear and you'll be fine. if you're pulling gears from an '86-up(IFS) remember that you'll only be able to use the rear third members since the IFS trucks have a 7.5" front diff. however you can still use the rear thirds in the front or rear of your truck as they're the same 8" diff

Saw an article in a copy of September Four Wheeler. A replacement kit to replace the Birfield joints in the front axle. Made by Yukon Gear & Axle, called the "Birfield Eliminator Kit". Anyone tried this kit yet? Heard any of the Good, Bad, or Ugly about it?

i think they've just become obsolete. bobby long(the guy who makes longfield joints) recently came out with a chromoly/300m birfield and 30 spline inner shafts(stock is 30 spline at the diff, but 27 at the birfield). stress testing showed that they were nearly on par with 35 spline dana 60 shafts in strength.

a set of these(2 shafts and 2 birfields) is about $650-ish, about the same price as a birf eliminator kit, and it's a drop-in improvement

I don't know about that.
My philosophy about vehicles is: the more automated, complex or the more moving parts the more likely it will break at the most inopportune time.

I think the Birfield fits 2 out of 3 of these. Where as the Spicer is a pretty simple design and has been around for a long time.

Found a good buy on a 1989 Toyota 4Runner V6, 4X4.
Is the V6 and trany a doable swap?
How about the electronics? Too new a vehicle?

the V6 in there wouldn't be worth your time to swap in. doesn't make all that much more power than the 22R, gets far worse mileage and it's hard to work on. the 3.4 used in '96 and later trucks is a much, much better engine

as for the birfield vs spicer deal, a birfield joint transfers power much more smoothly than a u-joint, especially at full lock. that, and if you break a birfield it usually doesn't take out the axle shaft like a u-joint will(or vice versa)

Thanx for the info Kyle....
I knew it was something odd like that....

I have an 80, but someone put in a 20R/22R Hybbie, and it has a mech pump on the head....I dont know if there is still a pump in the tank, or if its even still hooked up...
