Roll Me Over
Hi there Admin,

First of all, I want to say thank you for the great forums here at 4x4wire. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

We have a lot of new people showing up to the forum as of the last year (or obviously since the inception of these forums), and many of them do not know about the vast accumulation of knowledge already housed in archives and previous posts. Some people like myself even forget to run a search or two before posting.

Unfortunately, there are some here that feel the need to scold those who haven't performed a search before posting and it really gets annoying - more annoying than those who post before running a search (IMO).

I was wondering if I might offer a possible solution. Would it be possible to make the "Search" link at the top of the page flash red at a later software version? We could even make it part of new member signup, that the "Search" link flashes red for your first 100 posts and then extinguishes. Certain chronic non-searching abusers could even then be put on "search probation" where the "Search" link would only flash red for them for the next 50 posts or something.

I've seen similar functions at other forums. Just an idea.

We agree with the spirit of your suggestion. We plan on doing some things soon to better highlight the search function.

However, we cannot always force readers to search; we cannot hand-hold in every case to optimize a search; and even if search reveals The Truth, we can't force anyone to read it, let alone understand it.

Everyone should treat newbies and non-searchers with respect. It may be someone who has something valuable to add, you could meet the person on the trail (in real life! <gasp>) and become great friends, who knows. We realize it is frustrating at times, but not searching is just something that has always been around and will persist, despite our best efforts.
