I did get a second opinion (Aamco)..both say the same. I've had the truck for 43K and have flushed the tranny twice (both times with synthetic)...Pretty much sux, but I gotta get going. This girl is checking me out from across the bar...Jim

Jim,

IMHO, AAMCO is just as bad, if not worse than the dealer. I had them repair my old 84 Toyota Supra Auto tranny and after $2500 & numerous trips there, they simply couldn't get it fixed properly & it never felt as smooth as it was when originally. This is after more than a year of going back and forth to get them to fix it. I simply gave up on their "LIFE Sentence" warranty.

Unfortunately when it comes to locating a decent tranny shop, I don't have any words of wisdom for you. Perhaps others on here can chime in with some more advice for finding a decent shop to do the work.

Just like any UK vehicles they have big time electrical problems.

Why do the British drink their beer warm?

Oh man... now that's what I call jumping from the frying pan into the fire!

Just make sure that when you park that Range Rover... you check for leaks underneath. If there isn't a puddle of fluid then you are most likely out of oil, coolant and tranny fluid...

Get a Toyota Land Cruiser FJ80 or FZJ80. You will be a lot happier and they are better offroad.

I hate to say it but that is hard. I do agree w/ off roader.
That these trans are great. I have heard the word "bulletproof" when taking about this trans before (KM148 and KM146) . I saw one in the for sale board.
Don't know what motor it bolted to. I think it was BobShaw's he was asking $150?
Get a used one. You will get generally a 6mo warranty. !!
If you already made up your mind, tell us, but that LR will cost you way more money than you think.

I had to smile when I saw the LR. And to think I sold my 91 3 years ago for $4100 with 110K - the guy that bought it got me the cash quicker than a couple that drove up from Chicago in that very Rangie cuz they couldnt wait another day to be done with it The interior looks good though

I too will vouch for the sorryness of Aamco. Brought my 92 in once cause it wouldnt shift past #2. Came back later and they had a quote for me for a new tranny - said it was definitely blown. Got home, noticed the throttle control cable wasnt tightened down to the intake - worked as good as a new Aamco tranny

Just the fact that 3 Mitsu techs are interested in it gives me reason to believe that your problem isn't that big at all (and they know it!)- have you tried some of the good suggestions made here?

I just purchased the truck and I am trying to track down the problem. It appears that the O/D temp on the intake has already been grounded, so that doesn't seem to be the problem. The kickdown cable, which was just installed recently was too loose, so I tighted it up and now the kick down works again, but still no over drive...

There's an O/D OFF solenoid valve on the tranny (1 wire - Black/White going into the solenoid connector).

There's an OD OFF relay (location C-33, passenger footwell, right sidewall. It has 5 wires - Blue/Red, Red, Black/White, Blue/White, Black (ground).

Voltage is supplied through Fuse #3 (check it).

I'll bet a chicken sandwich that one of those will fix the problem.

I asked one of my friends at the dealership and he told me that its as simple as one of the relays or solinoids that have gone the way of old yeller (shot) thats why the mechanics were so interested in the rigg cause they knew it was not a hard to fix thing. wish I asked him about this before and I wish Frank did not beat me to it

Lee;
I agree that would be foolish. My concern is that the truck might not be reliable. It's also our beach truck that we take out during low tide. The mechanic doesn't think it's the cable which has me worried. If the truck fails to start, it's off to the british isles...
