Clutch Questions #57285

Got a few questions regarding my clutch.

I have an 82 4x4 with 5-speed. I was driving home and the clutch pedal got softer than normal and the clutch would not release. I had to rev match to shift all the way home. I removed the clutch master cylinder and pulled it apart and cleaned it I also did the same to the Slave. I bled the system and it appears to be working correctly.

First question is how far out does the slave push the rod? I am not sure if it is pushing the lever to the throwout bearing enough.

I have the Transmission ready to be removed but I hate to take it out if there is some easy thing that could be wrong.

The Clutch only has maybe 20,000 mile on it so I don't think that is would have failed yet.

Thanks,

Troy

Sounds like your problem is in the hydraulics. Have you noticed any fluid leaks?
Have you noticed the fluid level dropping?

If you got it bled properly, and it continues to give you problems, I would suspect the clutch master or the slave is going out on you.

Bonzai,

It does not appear to be leaking at all. when it stopped working the clutch pedal got a lot easier to press in. But I have watched the movement of the slave rod when the clutch is pressed and it appears to be working correcty. I think that I will replace the Master Cylinder first and see if that fixes it. thanks for the reply

Do 'em both, they are not expensive from NAPA and carry a lifetime warranty. If one is gone, the other is close on its heels. Same fluid, after all...
Avoid AutoZone, et. al.

Hope you get it fixed!
Ditto on what Bill said. Do them both and you should have everything corrected.

Both the clutch slave and master cylinder are rebuildable at about 25 bones for both kits. If the bores are good, it's a he!! of a lot cheaper than buying aftermarket junk.

One more quick question. I know that there is a soft line that runs from the frame to the hard line that goes to the Slave. Are these prone to going bad as well. I am going to replace it since I have everything disconnected but I though that I would ask.

--Thanks,

Troy

hydraulic fluid in the master cylinder reservior.

This simple hose has been the cause of many, many mis-diagnosed clutch jobs since, well, since there has been clutches <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="images/icons/tongue.gif" />
