I found this on Toyota's site: http://www.toyotaownersonline.com/news/articles.php?id=10Service Campaign Set for Some '01-'04 Truck and SUV Models Publication Date: 05/31/2005 On certain 2001 2002 Model Year 4Runner, 2001 2004 Model Year Tacoma 4WD and PreRunner, and 2002 2004 Model Year Sequoia and Tundra vehicles, there is a possibility that the Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint may experience excessive wear and looseness causing increased steering effort, reduced vehicle self-centering, and noise in the front suspension. If the vehicle is continued to be operated in this condition, in extreme cases, the lower ball joint may separate from the knuckle causing a loss of vehicle steering control. This new Special Service Campaign (SSC) will be launched in late June, 2005. Owners of the involved vehicles will receive a SSC notification by first class mail beginning in late June, 2005. The owner notification will be completed around December, 2005. Toyota dealers will replace the left and right Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint at NO CHARGE to the vehicle owners.

I've allready replaced mine. When I put my truck back together I decided to go ahead and replace the ball joints. The mechanic told me it was only the lower ball joints that were going to be recalled.

Contact the Toyota Regional Center where you are now, with your VIN, and where you bought the vehicle from, so they can get you in the database. We went thru this with the roomie's Corolla. Her DFW maintenance records had to be transferred to our regional area here.
The mailout campaign is supposed to run thru December.

Got my recall letter today... Guess I'm one of the lucky ones.
Considering it's only a ball joint it's doubtful, but does anyone know if the replacement involves a re-alignment?

They reset the toe-in and camber after replacing the ball joints. They don't reference off the rear axle, though.

What state do you live in? I'm in Indiana. Does that make a difference on what gets performed on the recall? They reset the toe-in and camber after replacing the ball joints. They don't reference off the rear axle, though.
Bill Thanks!

I just got my 03 back from the dealer,The recall replaced both ball joints and aligned it. I was told that if a lift was used, It will not be repaired. For some folks, I hope that is not true. I just ordered my lift, after the work was done. good luck.

This better not be true. I'm calling today to have the work done. should I mention that I have a lift? Or just drive it in and see what they say?

It's always better to find another dealer than to try to argue for coverage. Not all service writers are the same

The dealership here in Indy, IN told me today that any lift voids all factory suspension warranties! He was a little rude about it too!
My replacement took 2 hours from handing them them the keys to getting them back! I think they did a tire rotation too, but didn't charge me for it.
When I went in this morning I checked my headlights against the garage door, when I got my truck back from the dealership my drivers side headlight was out???

I just made my appointment at my local dealer for the recall work. I told them I had a lift, and they said no problem.
they also said they've been doing 3 or 4 of these a day and have yet to find a defective part.

The recall was for a 'scratch' on the surface of the ball (if I remember correctly) so unless they disassemble them I doubt they would even know how many were 'defective'.

I've been procrastinating. I'm leery about going to a dealer for repairs since a friend of mine whom was a service manager told me every dealership he's worked at, there have been mechanics who sabotage vehicles so they return for repair (replace something with worn out parts, etc) - it's their bread and butter. I have a 2002 runner with 80,000 miles with no steering issues. Do you guys advise I take it in? Hearing earlier on this thread, "after analylizing parts replaced, havent found a set yet that was bad" furthers my procrastination.

I'm still debating, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I was wrong about my mileage. I have 69,000 but steering feels brand new. * called toyoter in Vancouver. They said there is no expiration date. I'm wondering if I should just wait until they are worn but then again it could cause my tires to wear out of alignment - ok, new tires so I might as well go do it.

I hadn't heard from the dealer from whom I purchased my '04 Tacoma, so I called them today. He ran the VIN and said this campaign did not apply to my truck (it doesn't apply to all VINs).
Is he blowing smoke, or have others had the same experience?

Probably blowing the biggest smoke ever. I got a recall notice for my 04 truck several months ago, but I havent taken it in. I'll wait until I get my cornfed spacers in a few weeks then take it in so I can get the thing aligned.

If in doubt, contact the regional Toyota folks for your area; you can find their contact information via Toyota's website. Remember these are being made in more than one plant in the US now.

I got my recall a month ago. A week after one of the ball joints popped out and I replaced it. The dealer told me that the lift wasn't a problem. If you haven't done it get it done. You don't want to be driving down the highway when one of those joints gives out.

I was parked a couple days ago and upon leaving and steering I heard a knock from the front end and noticed my 4X4 indicator flashing and my cruise control not working (light for cruise ok but not flashing) Seems to steer fine but going to take it in the morning. I wonder if this problem would relate to my truck's symptoms.

How come my truck(2000 tacoma) doesn't fall under this recall!? Last week driving down the street at 30mph my driverside lower ball joint snapped right off and sent my truck sliding on the frame and lower suspension. Luckily I didn't hit anything. The part failed, therefore toyota should be responsible. I STRONGLY RECOMEND REPLACING BOTH SIDES! I got about 130K mi on my tacoma.

Recalls are based on what is reported to be faulty up to a certain percentile of vehicles. If your local dealership won't give you a satisfactory answer, then a call to the regional office is in order; have your VIN handy, be calm, take pictures, and find out if the recall has been expanded to include your vehicle. You should be able to find the regional Toyota service center for your area via Toyota's website.
The particulars of this recall can be found in our Toyota tech archive; make sure you expand your viewing selection to see it (lower left of screen there).
Glad you weren't hurt; good luck!

I think he just wants to know how you can prove the work is actually done. Put some fingernail polish on the old one.
I had my ball joints replaced on my T-100 and it was obvious the work was done, because everything looked new. I can see on a newer vehicle it may be difficult to determine if the work was done.
Have a great New Year,

Okay, it's more like--tell them you want them to keep the old parts, so you can inspect them. I go so far as to turn the worksheet my direction to write that information on there myself as a lady customer.

Man, I gotta get this done. Just noticed I have a small tear on my driver's side upper ball joint.

I haven't been on here in forever. I just had to have front ball joints and lower control arms replaced on my 2001 Tacoma 4x4. My truck was not in the recall.
