This clip is from the newspaper on the Ford recall.
Toyota Motor Co., meanwhile, recalled 978,000 sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks amid concerns over the power steering system. The affected vehicles include the 1990-1995 4Runner SUV, 1989-1995 truck 4WD and 1993-1998 T-100 pickup.
Toyota said a rod linking the steering wheel and the wheels may fracture under conditions where the steering wheel is turned while the vehicle is stopped. Owners will be notified beginning in mid-September, the company said.
Is this the recall for those that have replaced the broken linked discussed over the past year? Does this affect the 4x2 models or just 4x4?

Call your local dealer and have them run your VIN. They just got notice today to start contacting T100 owners and the relay rod will be replaced at no cost to the customer.

Ha! Stealership near me still doesn't know about this! They want me to drop off my truck.. I recall that last year, I mentioned the cracked relay rod issue with the Toyota place and they "never had a problem like this. Toyotas are reputable vehicles and have the least recall of any manufacturer" ... eat those words! "and it must be because you lifted and modified your vehicle..." eat me, stealership!

Just called my local stealership, they ran my VIN and said there are no recalls for my truck, should i rest easy or bring it in anyways...?
My VIN is even listed under the NHTSA report, but the dealer said they "cant warranty" it right now...im going to guess they are blowing smoke out of their , ill just have to call back in a few weeks when they hear more about it

can we get $ back for the links we bought ourselves? i forget the cost..maybe ~100? The document on the gov't web site spells out what to do for reimbursement. Looks like you can get something back, I'm sure it won't be quick or easy, better hope you have ALL your service records and receipts.

Maybe the 3.0 required more clearance from the oil pan, so they changed the steering rod...but then again why not on the minis?

I would call toyota directly. The dealers haven't even gotten any official word on this let alone parts. Toyota cust. svc. gladly ran mine.

my local dealer said "I was definitely not eligible for the recall" toyota said "you are part of the recall" called back the dealer "toyota hasnt given us all the info yet.." so I say "maybe you should have said I dont know" they reply "not our fault" good grief... with over 68000+ t-100s affected, odds are most of us will be getting a letter, just call toyota, and make sure your address is up to date!

OK. So we start a pool. Everyone enters and the first to get their recall done wins Or maybe the last person wins. Or maybe the first person that gets it done right, or

I just called Toyota, 1-800-331-4331, (make sure you have your VIN) . They had the previous owner of my truck still in their database. We updated it and he said I would be mailed info about the recall in a couple weeks.

Shouldn't be any balking... We're not talking about an already failed component (for most), we're talking about a component they've deemed unworthy to stay on vehicles well out of warranty.

I just spoke with a guy at Toyota Support to change my address, he confirmed my recall eligibility, gave me a case # and said I don't have to wait for the letter. He also said, if they give me the run around, call him direct and he will make it happen immediately, no sense in crashing first. Good luck everyone!

Per the 800 # - it's 4WD T100's. That should answer an early Q. Anybody hear otherwise?

That is correct, just the 4wd, Toyota HQ said it will be the end of the month into October before the parts are sent out and we get our notices. I would definetly call HQ at the number above and make sure you give them your VIN and current address.

When I get my linkage done under warranty (I am eligible), is there anything I should have the dealership replace while they have it torn apart. I have 84,000 miles on my truck.

There's very little tearing apart to do. Might as well have the TREs inspected, but to replace them will be on your dime. They will probably try to sell you an idler arm with it too. You could go to a dealership to get a dash light replaced, and they'd try to sell you an idler arm with it.

Granted, the jury-rigging I did on the idler arm grease boot probably warrants that... Question, will they need to do an alignment after replacing the relay rod? I'm guessing not... but was curious what ya'll thought.

Highly doubtful... There's nothing that's adjusted/unadjusted for the removal or reinstall.

If someone has a way to post it for download, I have the 18-page bulletin issued to the service shops. It gives instructions and also identifies which vehicles are elligible by VIN. According to the document(pdf), they are supposed to check and correct your alignment after the procedure... I'm thinking I may put in my new T-bars before taking it in and then let them take care of any alignment issues.

I called the 1-800 Toyota number on Sept. 8 to get my 1998 T100 into their owner's database. The fellow got my VIN and gave me a reference number, asked who the local dealer was, said letters about the recall would be sent in late Sept., and that most dealers would not have the new part yet.
I took my truck in on Sept. 15 because the front passenger seatbelt was jammed. Lo and behold, the recall part was in and they installed it. They had to order a new seatbelt, but said it was covered by a 10 year warranty and would be free to replace.

Obviously, it's an Adobe Acrobat file, so if you don't have that program you'll need to download it from here: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.htmlFeel free to pass this info arround as needed ~ I do have a good bit of bandwidth, but if someone has an issue just say the word and I can move it somewhere else.

This replaces the center "relay rod". I thought H20MAN had pictures of a broken pitman arm-(no longer posted). Are there any issues with the pitman arm too, or is my memory faulty?
I scheduled mine today at the dealer. The desk lady had to "check" with the service manager first, since my truck was lifted. He first declined to do the alignment, but later agreed to do the whole job. He says they won't do the recall work on trucks that have any part of the steering modified-as a result of a lift. In other words, the steering must have all stock parts.

Okay, get a little more proactive here; this is a SAFETY recall.... Get on the phone to the dealer with your VIN and let them know you exist.
You can see by the other posts with regard to this, that these gents aren't sitting on their hands.
(Sound of a cracked whip) Get on that phone!
I have even called 2 parties who are selling their Runners to let them know there is a safety recall out.

This replaces the center "relay rod". I thought H20MAN had pictures of a broken pitman arm-(no longer posted). Are there any issues with the pitman arm too, or is my memory faulty? Faulty Memory: no pitman arm issues I had pictures posted of my broken steering relay rod. I think Toyota also calls it a drag link and center link. I still have the failed part - maybe Toyota would like to but it back.

mtgoat gleaned the '93 FSM for that section; is in the recall sticky over in the early trucks section for the visual folks.
For those of you waiting on a letter, there's 5K sheets of bond paper in a 40# box; usually delivered 40 cs to the pallet; roughly 5 pallets....
And the assumption all affected Yotas are still on the road, and within the same region they rolled off the lots from, and that your truck has been seen by a Yota dealer at least once, where you currently live, to establish a Toyota-based record.....

on the first page of the pdf file http://darladog.com/toyotassc.pdfit shows that if the relay rod has to be replaced that they need to do the alignment too, I am bringing a copy of it printed out to the dealer, not that the dealer would ever screw me... or replace the tie rods....

Did my truck yesterday. The charges would have been $325.90 for the work if not covered under recall.
When I asked if they did an alighnment, I was told it was out 1/8 of an inch which is within toyota spec, so no alignment was performed.

Got my letter from Toyota today.
I called my local dealership a couple of weeks ago when this first came out in the news. They had heard about it too and they said they would fix it whenever I wanted to bring it in, whether I received a notice from Toyota or not.
I always feel bad when I read about some of your experiences at the dealership. Can't believe how some places really try to bend you over! I'm always treated very well at my dealership, but most all the guys in the service dept are my 4wheelin', shootin', snowmobilin', beer drinkin', China Buffet eatin' buddies.

Who is that Creeper? I might just bring My T up there and have it done (I'm going to be visiting my parents in February anyway). I'm not so sure I trust the dealers arround me after I called on this issue.
And small towns DO rock... I hope to be back in Lander within a year.

Fremont Toyota-GMC, formerly Seamunds Toyota on the west end of town. If you can wait till Feb, I would. These guys have always been really easy to work with.
Hurry up and get here before housing costs get out of control. Since they announced that Lander will be the site of the new WY Catholic College in 2007, (somewhere up near Red Canyon) prices have been going nuts.

You could go to a dealership to get a dash light replaced, and they'd try to sell you an idler arm with it. So true! I don't think I've been there a single time that I haven't been told about my idler arm. My rig is in the shop today doing the recall. The dealer just called and said they were unable to get the alignment perfect because the Pitman and idler arm need replaced. I remembered this post and laughed in his face (well, ear) and told him thanks, but no thanks. But he did say he would give me a free alignment when I fix it, no matter who fixes it.

Holy Crap! What an ordeal. Show up at the dealer, they bring the truck in, and say "You cant wait for it" well, too bad, I am, and by the way the rotors are warped... again after about 2 hours, (being forced to watch Regis and Kelly) I get called down to my truck They have discovered the after market steering stabalizer. "this isnt stock" Yup "well we have to make a note of that" OK "it might not fit back on because the new bar is thicker" I look and see there is clearance. It will fit. "fine" I think that the mechanic is the grouchiest least cheerful chap I have met, and he seems to be cranky about working on my truck. So, I ask are the rotors warped? "well there is some blueing of the rotors" Oh, ok.... (I am going to make a seperate post about this) And your going to do the alignment right? "well thats not part of the recall" I pull out the PDF file and point it out.. Yeah it is "well its gonna be real hard" Thats why you are a trained professional, and I smile.
2 hours later the truck is done....
Left wheel alignment is 1.4 right wheel is 2.0 and he claims due to rust he cant get the alignment any better than that.
elapsed time 4 hours, or
Regis and Kelly Tony Danza show Arthur Berenstien Bears Mr Rogers (with peggy flemming who had scary plastic surgery) and it was headed towards oprah when I had to get away.
I had to listen to Rancid and the Ramones super loud to get my head straight
Yikes.
Jeff
the scary creakiing noise when the wheel is turned all the way to lock is gone too.

"...due to rust."
Sounds like he could have gotten it into spec if he'd replaced some parts (tie rod adjusters frequently rust and seize, as do LCA alignment cams), but maybe he he had a pretty good idea that you would not approve of that...? Or maybe he just got it as close as he could since he knew you wanted to get out of there? Or maybe he was just lazy? You didn't get all the info of what/why.
Lots of possibilities, and there's two sides to every story.

I was ready to stay for the duration, and I have poured an embarassingly large amount of money into this dealership. I also dont mind spending money on the parts to do it right, but it seems like every time the guy gets under the truck he complains about rust and then doesnt do much.
I do get very cranky when the job is done wrong, I am still baffled by them charging me 325 for new calipers, and not putting on new rotors.
I dont know what the mechanics beef is, but you can bet your last dollar that he is not touching my truck again.

Got mine done last week. Took about two hours and they replaced the rod and did the alignment, no questions asked. They did note on my service sheet that I need a new fan belt ($175!!) and a front brake job ($250). I already knew about the front brakes--gonna need new rotors--again! That price quote was just for new pads. No thanks, I'll do all that myself. But they didn't try to push anything extra on me, which was surprisingly refreshing.

You guys are going to love this..... I head into the dealer to get the mod done. Within a few hours they say it's good for pickup. No arguements on the alignment... I almost started to feel like I could trust a dealer. Then I get home and take a closer look. They only hooked up the left side of the steering stabilizer. That's right, it's just hanging there moving around every time I take a turn. The bolt is completely gone so I can't even attach it myself. All this even after I asked them to check out the steering stabilizer for wear. They were conveniently shut down by the time I figured this out, but I'll keep you updated on their excuse.
At lease I made it home in one piece......
By the way, anyone know of an after market steering stabilizer that works better.
Thanks,
Vern

Got mine done last Friday and the alignment too. As a test, I asked them if it needed an alignment when doing this (and I knew it did) and they told me yes, they had to do an alignment. I didn't see the old part but they told me it didn't look that bad. They did tell me my upper and lower ball joints would need attention soon which I could tell from the clunking in the front when I turn the wheel to full lock.
I had put on a new set of 285 KO's earlier in the week and that got rid of all the shimmying problems I had. One tire was cupped pretty bad. I have a Rancho stabilizer that I really like, especially when running 285's with no lift.

I'm not even bothering to run one right now... Had some goofy trouble with the brackets from Doetsch Tech, finally just said screw it. Gets interesting over one rollercoaster section on I-5 thru San Juan Capistrano - just have to make sure I have a good grip on the wheel.

Yes Rancho is the way to go. You dont need the OEM bolt on the center link since it comes with U-bolts.

not to run the topic totally of course, but remember the napa one is lager than OEM, cheaper the OEM and fits all the OEM brackets.
Back on topic.. I have yet to see my letter from toyota. Perhaps a call is in order.

I didn't want to wait for a letter so I printed the PDF file and took it into my local dealership last Thursday. They acknowledge it and did the work, with alignment, on Saturday. They have been doing a lot of them recently and had the part in stock. Dont wait, it may take a while to work through "the list". Brew

damn. nobody ever said anything about a recall down here. The dealerships will probably take forever to get in touch with me. everyone down here is still worried about recovering from the hurricane the delears dont give a damn about telling anyone about a recall. i am glad that i looked on here and saw this otherwise i probably would never have found out till the damn thing broke on me.

Get a grip!!!! This recall was announced WAAAAAAY ahead of the hurricanes. In fact, it was on www.foxnew.com and www.cnn.com. The original post date here was the first week of AUGUST. I'd say more, but this should suffice.

Took my T-100 1997 in today for the recall repair. They had the truck only about 30 minutes and called to inform me that my truck needed a new ball joint ($125) and a new idler arm $250 part, $50 labor). I told them no thanks, but I did go for the cooling system flush, since it has not yet been done.
They said I needed a water pump replaced also because there was a small leak. If I get that done is their anything else I could get done while they have it apart other than the timing belt?
Thanks, Brad

I just got the recall finally as well. They didn't try to sell me anything else... they know I do most of my own work. =)
Additionally, one of the screws holding my skidplate on had been lost... they replaced it for free without even commenting. As far as dealerships go, I've found a winner.

Last week my water pump locked up. fried the timing belt and the motor stalled. after replacing the pump and timing belt got it running. 3 days later it quit again. It seems the idler and tensioner pulleys/bearings were either affected by the antifreeze or they just went south. anyway the seals on both the bearings fell into the path of the timing belt and it jumped time. junked the new timing belt 34.00 and had to buy new pulleys 112.00 and 97.00. toyota only part. I would check thoes parts if you are in there. if toyota is going to do it im sure they will let you know if they are bad.

Thank you for the information. How many miles on your vehicle? Mine has 90,000. Would be a shame to have to replace the idler arm after just having been in there to do the water pump and the timing belt. Brad

hey i do have a grip it aint my fault if the damn dealerships down hear dont tell anyone about recalls till way after everyone else know about it. I am just saying that now it will take them even longer to tell anyone about the recall because everything down here is still so screwed up and backed up. I dont check news websites so i did not know recalls were posted about the truck my only way of finding out is either this site which i just got back on or by waiting for the dealership to notify me.

well, I figgured I'd procrastonated long enough and took my T in yesterday morning. It only took the dealer 27 hours to get it done ~ I guess they had a problem vehicle scheduled infront of mine yesterday. Got me a free wash and wax though (needed, badly). Absolutly NO comment about the idler arm, or any other additional parts. Quite the contrary actually, the service manager said it was one of the cleanest T's they'd delt with, and certainly THE cleanest with 150k miles on it. Kind of shocking to me, as I've not ecactly been kind to the truck with all the towing (and overheating of the tranny) I've been doing.
Anyway, I think the alignment was needed as it seems to drive a little nicer now (in town, haven't been on the highway yet). Could just be my imagination though. Glad it's done and behind me.... and they didn't screw up my doors, or any other part of the truck. Maybe I'll actually let them do a major service sometime in the future...
Creeper, I didn't drop your name ~ maybe I should have to get quicker service. Then again, maybe I Still wouldn't have the truck back if I had dropped your name.

Last weekend @ Toyota of Carlsbad... Take it in at 7am, yet still have to leave it with them until the next day.
Since I'm there anyways, I ask them to do a simple check on something - I have a bunch of play at the backside of the p/s box (steering wheel side) and I want to see if there's any way to adjust it out. I explain to them that I have already removed my non-stock steering dampener (so they won't lose any of the bracket parts) & to call should they have a ?'s... They don't call; What they proceed to do is replace the relay rod, jack up what was a perfectly aligned front end & place blame on play in the steering on the idler arm (1 week old), the rag joint (0 play in it) and the lack of a steering dampener (which I told them I removed). In addition to all of this, they 'wash' my vehicle... The kids down the block do a better job - at least they do the windows & don't leave water spots.
I went over to Firestone the same day & had them correct the alignment - Dealership claims the TRE sleeves were frozen... Hmmm, kinda funny since they adjust just fine for everyone else. THIS IS EXACTLY WHY I DON'T GO TO THE DEALER.

Had mine done today. My wife took it in, done in an hour, drives fine. They replaced the (what I would call) drag link. It's the bar that attaches between the two inner tie rod ends. I have replaced both of the inner tie rod ends myself, and each time I had to split the sleeves with a Dremel, and install new ones. Mine were siezed up. Winkel

i finally had the recall done, and mailed all my documentation to toyota. then toyota mailed me a check that exceeded the cost of the relay rod i installed. i sent them a receipt with what i paid for the rod. maybe they refunded me the retail cost (which I didn't pay) or added some $ for my labor? either way, i was happy.

I just bought my T1 last summer(2008) & wasn't aware of the recall. I immediatly took it to the trail, you know for initial 4x4 testing (lol), & found the truck had a very loud pop when the wheels were cut hard L or R. I took it back to my shop, jacked it up, & started checking the tie rods & ball joints. They all were new MOOG parts, but I found my steering stabilizer was busted & a sway bar link almost rusted in two. I replaced these w/ Rancho & Energy Suspension components, & hit the trail again. It still popped. So I was alittle confused then. Getting back home & checking my mail, I found a safty recall notice for my truck, for a "steering relay rod". I imediatly thought, "theres my popping noise". I hit my local dealership & they repaired it no questions asked or money out of pocket. The guys @ the dealer also told me this recall was a joke as far as they could see. They said they had yet to see one of these trucks with the problem that the recall warranted. So, I hit the trail again, & the pop remained. To make a long story alittle shorter, one of my wheelin' buddies -A1- told me to grease the wheel stops on my truck & it would'nt pop anymore. He was right, I greased them & it has'nt popped since. But about the recall, the new "steering relay rod" looks beefier than the old one, but I have noticed no difference, good or bad, in my truck.

hey, anyone know the wire diagram for the two electrical plugs going into my 96 t100 3.4 auto fuel tank? I bought a fuel cell and dont want to run a wire from my ignition to power the cell. would rather find out if the plugs can be pulled apart and run my power off the plug. would the power to the fuel pump be disturbed in anyway if all the other un needed wires were cut back or do they need to be all hooked up together to complete some sort of weird cycle? anyone w experience please feel free to explain your best method. thanks

No, I'm afraid I don't know anything about the wire diagram as well. I'll ask our local mechanic, he might have an idea.
