Mudrunner
I want to buy a 1st gen 4runner, preferably a solid axle '85, but i am having a hard time finding 1. my price range is 3000 or so, only because i want to put 2000 into it on susp.,tires,and/or any repairs that need to be done. So i guess my price range is 5000 if it is in good shape and built the way i want it.
So i guess my question is; should i hold out for the 85, or should i buy a later year and invest in a SAS?
Does anyone in so cal do a good job on a SAS?
I want to get the job done right.
Any comments or advise is always greatly appreciated.

I own an 85, so I'm biased. But, getting a newer 4Runner, like a Gen2 (1990-1994) and doing a SAS is the way I will go if anything every happens to it. The choice is really yours, and your wallets.

If you can get an IFS Runner cheaper, get it an SAS it.
But remember it'll cost you around $2000 just for the parts to do a SAS. Plus labor unless you do it yourself.

In my area 84-85 Runners go for way less than $3000, look harder. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

In your area, 84-85 4Runners have rotted frames, too!

Most of them do.
But I was lucky and the frame on my 84 is solid as a rock.
I went over every square inch of the frame with a needle scalar.
And I paid $900 for it 3 yrs ago. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" />
