Just got my new rear 4.88 diff installed and I need to put gear oil in now but I dont have a socket that fits. It seems pretty large maybe 24mm. If anyone knows offhand what size the plug is that would be nice.

24mm, same as the front diff and the tranny and t-case drain plugs. Use only a 6-sided socket.

when you change the oil again after break-in.

That's what I use, or Arctic lube. Finally found there's a place in Anchor town that sells Redline.

From your post, it sounds like the diff is installed as well as the drain and fill plugs. If so, then simply remove the fill plug to fill the oil in there and you are set. The comment above was related to a recent thread where someone removed the drain plug in order to change oil. All fine and dandy until they found the fill plug was stuck. So IF you are changing the oil, be sure to remove the FILL plug first then the DRAIN plug last. This way, you'll be able to easily refill the oil you drain out.

Replace those plugs with these. After you drag that diff over a few rocks you won't be able to get the socket on the plugs. Part # 90341-18021 in the magnetic flavor, and $3 each with gasket from the dealer. They also work on the tranny and tc. Here is one installed on my FJ40: ![[Linked Image]](http://ratstew.home.comcast.net/fillplug.jpg)
