I'm not exactly sure when this happened. I went wheeling a few weeks ago, but I checked under the truck afterwards and didn't see this at that time. I make a habbit of inspecting my truck before I go on long trips, so I would think I would have seen it before I drove 500miles last weekend. I was getting ready to do another long drive today and I'm glad I spotted it. The relay rod is bent pretty bad a few inches from the idler arm. Both the idler and tie rod are rubbing against the frame.

*EDIT* Just got it off and took the idler apart. It's also bent. It's hard to get a good picture, but with lines drawn over it you can kinda see how bad they are.

I am thankful to be alive and well to post this. Always remember to check things over on your truck before you get in!

PS. No, my '86 is not covered under the relay rod recall and this break is not consistent with that failure. But if you have an '89-'95 Toyota, take it in under the recall and have the relay rod fixed before it cracks and breaks near the pitman arm.

do yourself a favor and thrash that steering dampner ,if your front end is in good shape ther eis no need fo it ,plus its at way to much of an angle.

That's what I was thinking. If it bound up, and looking at it's upper mount, looks like that would bend it.

I want to thank my buddy Mikey. He lives down the street from me and just finished his SAS a couple months ago. He generously gave up his steering linkage for me to use. Thanks man!

His idler arm was quite a bit different from mine. It uses a joint at both ends rather than a rotating shaft. The arm itself is a little beefier to. This came off a '93 (I think?) 4Runner. I wonder if this will last longer than the other design.

I left off the stock stabalizer - not because it made any difference or that I wanted to, but because I messed up some of the threads on one of the ends getting it off. I know the Rancho stabalizer isn't at the best angle, but it's not something I'm too concerned with for daily driving. I will move it before I go on my next offroad excursion.

The stabalizer is putting it's force in exactly the direction your relay rod bent. I think it would be the first thing I would change.

I had one of those also. It lasted exactly one trip on the rocks before it got so bent that it would grind against the frame rail.

I am going to change the stabalizer angle, but since it is not bound or bent itself, I do not think it's what caused the relay rod to bend. I'm sure I could be wrong, but even a hardened shaft of that size would not take the load required to bend the relay rod.
