Need a Spot
I have an engine I am trying to ID the serial number is 0555987. It came in to sick bay in an 86 2x, but it has dome pistons and single row chain so I suspect it may be an 84.
My 81 has double row chain and dome pistons, my 86 4runner had flat top and single row chain.

On a similar note can the 81 double row chain set up be used on later single row engine???
I assume the cover, guides atc will need to be changed.

Body Damage is Cool
Call your local dealer with the number, they should be able to tell you when it was made within a few months or so.

In my own experience, if the oil pan is off, there is a date stamped in the mating surface on the rearward side that is the casting date. Obviously it's not the 86's original mill. Keep in mind you also see these in the old Celica's; you just change the oil pan and dipstick (1" difference)

20R22R History

I think LC Engineering sells the TC kit you're asking about.
You WILL need a pre-85 timing chain; there's 3 links difference between them and later 22Rx's, due to the change in block/head heights. That's why you don't go mixing between the years to put together a long block.

Tnx for quick replys!
I will finish pulling engine today. It appears to be a 83-84 engine. Will verify later when pan is off.
#1 cylinder has some scrape marks like wrist pin may be loose.
Head had some corosion around exhaust valve water pockets(seems common)will weld up before flattening head and block.
Probably putting too much into this 2x but I hate to see a decent body go to waste!
I hope the block is not damaged past repair limits!

Good luck! Find a decent local machinist. These are pretty bombproof.

I have built a number of 22r's in last yrar or so but I was not going to do much to this one as it is 2wd. I picked it up from a towing company for 800 with supposedly only a bad clutch. After clutch was alternator, battery mystery misfire and then blown head gasket. Head has a cross threded spark plug, block has some gouges in bore and crank is worn. I will do most of work except crank my self. I have an old boring bar and valve grinder. Will also have head welded around cooling pockets near exhaust valve and resufraced. So for a bargin fix and resell it is getting whole treatment. I also have to find cause of left wheel camber being out of wack!
