SO I've had a bad passanger side front wheel bearing for about a month. Just hadn't found the time to fix it yet. I just called the dealership(I never go to the dealership, but it's very convienient right now) and the price they gave me was $425 for 1 bearing replacement!!! $200 for the bearing, $225 for labor! that seems a little much. I think i'll be taking it to a local shop to do. My only problem is that i've heard Non-Toyota bearings don't work as well. Any thoughts?!

Its not the front I had problems with, but needed my rear outer seals replaced to pass inspection.

Here's a link to my post:
About to get soaked?

In summary- got three times the work done at a very trusted mechanic who does our fleet maintenance for half of what Toyota estimated. He said it'd be best to go ahead and replace all the seals and the bearings while he had the thing apart.

If your employer maintains a fleet, ask around to see where they get their work done..more oft then not it has been a trial and error for them to find the best place.

So far, no problems with the non-Yoter bearings, either.

Hey Rich, thanks for the reply. I've been calling around, and if you can believe it, Yota dealership is pretty close to everyone else. The lowest I got was $400. Toyota quoted me 2HRs of labor, where everyone else is quoting me 4 hours of labor. Anyway, i'm going to keep calling, but i'm leaning toward toyota right now !! I usually do all my own work, but i'm pressed for time, and don't have access to a press for the bearing. oh well!!

Is there a local 4x4 club there in Boston that could help find you someone?

Would they just do the labor if you brought them the bearing? I think I got mine for about $45 and it has been running smooth since last fall. That thing was a ***** to do though. If you keep driving it with it bad it might get harder and harder to get out as well, so I would get it taken care of as soon as possible.

Every shop i called said they wouldn't install the bearing if i bought one and gave it to them. They said they couldn't guarantee the performance and warranty on the item. I've got an appointment at Toyota tomorrow, but i'm still calling around to see if i can get lucky. If not, dealership here i come!!!!

And it might be $180 more.. driving around on a bad bearing can cause the bearing to tear up your hub. That is what happened to me. SO make sure they inspect that hub for any damage and replace it if it does or your new bearing will go out very fast.
