The gear ratio is listed on the data plate under the hood on the firewall.

Oscar,
At the Pick-n-Pull in Roseville, NE of Sacramento, there are 3 4x4 Mistu pickups between 88 and 91, all 4 cylinder models. On Craigslist Stockton and Sacramento, there are currently 2 trucks of that age, one in Sonora for $300 and another in Chico for $500.
If you need some 4.625 (after all) gear sets, I have plenty of those around, same with the local yards. ROAD TRIP ! Guess this weekend will not be good as its been raining but will try anyways to make it out to the Roseville Pick-N-Pull. And YES by general rule all 4x4 M-Max had the 4:22's But can anyone confirm if the 2.4L and V6 4x4 M-max had the same diff set-up ( 8" front and 9" rear ) Never pulled a front diff out completelly as I need the pinion gear as well, so rather do the rear Thanks for the tip/lead rxinhed But still interested in a set if anyone has them already out. Oscar

I have an 85 monty 2.6 manual, and a 3.0 auto, that I am parting out, but I don't know what gears they have. I never drove the 2.6, but I have the 3.0 and runs good. How would I find out the size and gear ratio... Hello Dan1171 Bud you you confirm you have the 4:22's in the 8" diff in EITHER one of those you have let me know please. Please e-mail me at ( oscar-the-grouch@sbcglobal.net ) Thanks Oscar

My 94 V6 Max is 8&9" 4.22s. The 2.4 Max I have is 2wd, I never looked at the rear axle. When it comes back into site from being under the snow I can take a look. I can see the top of the cab today.

If its a 2WD then its got a 8" rear. I believe, almost 100% sure that ALL 2WD Max's came standard with 3:90's. Not sure if there were any 2.4L 4x4 Max's though ? And WOW the CAB ! Gee I am practically sweating bullets here in Cali today. No problem. I will look this afternoon when I get home and let you know in the morning. Sweet ! Thanks Bud oscar

Well, mine isnt a 3.0, but I will have 4.22 gears frt & rear to sell in a week if you are interested. It will be out of a 3.5, 1999 Montero. Email me @ APKouts@aol.com or just post up. Good luck, Angelo Angelo, you should have 4.272 gears. I know it's a minor distinction but it may be of interest.

I couldn't find a data plate on the firewall. Maybe I am just looking in the wrong location. The only one I found didn't not have that information on it.

My '97 has 4.272 gears. DavidG I remember you saying your SR had the same. What Gen2 SR trucks had the 4.63 then? Was that the 3.0? I guess they went to 4.272 with the 3.5...
'97 Montero 'LSR' - 4.6 gears & factory rear locker, 33" Procomp muds on 15x8 steelies, 50mm coil spacers, T-bar crank, Airlift, sans rear sway, 50mm rear frame & fuel tank lift, Aisins, ARB front bumper + 10k lb winch, 50mm DIY body lift, rock sliders, cut rear quarter panels...
