It turns out it was a camshaft journal wearing down. I am going to replace my cam shaft(s). Is there anything want to know or anything special I want to do before I get started?

I just pulled the head covers and found a "tweaked" shim lying in the oil reservoir. Also the corresponding cam journal is worn down.

Now I just need a tool that will hold the cam sprockets while I get them loose.

Sean, I don't know if you're aware, but there is a 93 FSM sticky'd at the top of this section for your guidance, esp in the inspection phase.

I have poured over that thanks. Just wondering if there's anything else anyone can add. It's going pretty well. I think I will replace both cams since I have them exposed.

I guess one question I would have is whether I should buy an OEM set or aftermarket and if so, what would be best for gas milage (product suggestions welcome at this point.)

Now I just need a tool that will hold the cam sprockets while I get them loose. To break the cam gear bolt lose you need either an 1-1/8" or1-1/4" wrench, and a 2x4 about 18 inches long. For the passenger side cam gear place the 2x4 on end on top of the upper arm and brace the wrench against it, for the driver's side use the top of the engine, to install reverse the procedure. Be careful when breaking the cam gear lose, they are prone to breaking
More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else. '90 X-cab 4.88's 33 BFG AT's, rr ARB, Headers, Ignition upgrade, cold air induction. '91 X-cab 5.29's 315's BFG MT's, rr ARB, custom bumper and flatbed
