I would stay away from the 4cly. It is a 2.2L GM engine.

Body Damage is Cool
This is my daughter's 2001 Isuzu Rodeo Sport, 2WD, auto trans, hardtop, 87000 miles. We bought it used February 2005 with around 66000 miles on it. I had the timing chain, tensioners, and water pump replaced at 71000 as there were no maintainance records with it. This has been a good vehicle...not exactly what she wanted though. May 2005 we bought a used 1995 Mustang convertible for our two kids to share, and my daughter took it over when her brother left for college. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The Isuzu 2.2L is not overly powerful, about the same as my 88 SWB Raider with a 2.6L and auto trans. The Isuzu runs well, averages 19 mpg around town and will do 25 mpg on the highway. It is no speed demon, I doubt you could drive it out the back of a cargo plane and get it up to 100 mph before it smashed into the earth. 2.2L is a noisy engine by design...not rattling noisy but just loud.

The one you are looking at should have a five speed if it is 4WD. They get a bit better mileage. If the one you are looking at has the hardtop, make sure you get the plastic interior sunroof covers. Those covers are nearly $400.00 each from the factory.

I personally like the Rodeo Sport and mostly drive it now. I have been looking for a 4x4 version for nearly two years, the few I have found here in Atlanta were not as well taken care of as the one I bought.

My daughter's preferred ride.

Too many 4x4's, not enough time or money

Getting the Wheeling Fever
My daily driver is a 99 2wd rodeo with the 2.2 in it and a 5 speed. It does fine as long as the air conditioner isn't on. The A/C robs my power like crazy. If I have the A/C on and I need to pull out of somewhere in a hurry I turn it off, because it will not take off fast with it on. My truck has 93,000 miles on it and (knock on wood)the timing belt, spark plugs, serpentine belt, and a fuel filter is all I have ever replaced! Besides tires and WHEEL STUDS.

This 4 cyl engine is NOT a GM engine. This is a native Isuzu thing. Underpowered, but reliable and properly engineered.

Sorry, but the 2.2 IS a GM engine.

Are you sure about the 1998+ Isuzus ? I suppose that you are under impression that 2.2L engine on Chevy S10 is the same engine as used by Isuzu on Rodeo/Amigo 1998+. As far as I remember, they share no parts.

Richard, you can perform an experiment. Go to the Kragen web site, and try to find engine replacement parts for 2000 S10 with 2.2L engine, and for Amigo 2000 with 2.2L engine. You will see no common part numbers at all.

I may be wrong, but I doubt so.
