Hi all, I just acquired a 2000 Trooper LS. After driving about 700 miles, the check engine light came on. First I thought was the oil pressure, added a quart of Mobile 1 and the light when out. So, I changed the oil today. The light came back on again. I think it is stored in the memory. What is the proper way to reset the computer? Is removing the battery terminal for 5 mins. will reset it? Previous owner never had the light come on. The only thing I did to the car was driving 700 miles and filled up the gas tank. I did check the gas cap.

This is a very intricate procedure:

  • Walk to where your vehicle is parked
  • Open your vehicle, and step inside of it.

  • Start the vehicle

  • Drive to the nearest Autozone

  • Go inside the Autozone
  • Ask the dude to scan your code
  • Hang out with the dude while he scans the code
  • Make note of the code or codes
  • Ask the dude to reset the check engine light
  • Thank the dude.
  • Drive home, checking whether or not the light returns
  • Search the forums to see if your code or cause has been discussed before

ok, co-worker brought in the scanner today. The light went out this morning. The code was P0405. EGR flow low. There was another same code pending. Erase the memory and it came back on. Can't seem to find any related message on this site. Do you have any link?

Thanks

ok here's the relatively good news: it's very likely this is just a clean-and-reinstall fix.

the two most likely culprits are dirty and slow EGR itself and dirty and slow IAC motor.

Remove and clean both of those thoroughly, and reinstall.... and you're likely to be golden. I don't have enough direct familiarity with YOUR engine configuration to know how to test the EGR functionality on the vehicle, but i've turned enough wrenches in my day to be confident about the likelyhood this'll fix ya.

You'll need a new EGR gasket, but probably won't need much if anything else if you're just doing a Remove-clean-replace. Don't forget to apply a light coat of lubricant after cleaning... a "3 in one" household oil, or "marvel mystery oil" or whatever is probably best - a solvent-carried oil like WD40 is probably worst.

Thanks for the reply. Here is something I found while surfing the net.
http://home.adelphia.net/~pjcalinski/TrooperEGR/TrooperEGR.htm
I will give it a test first on the connections. Seems to me that it is a common problem for this gen. A new EGR valve is about $120 at Autozone. The old one I can repair it and use it for spare. Thanks again.

I had a 407 which I believe was a similiar code. Try cleaning the EGR passages (search for the details), if that does not work take your EGR to a junkyard and grab a few from GM cars that resemble it. It is a very common Delphi part used on many vehicles. I used one from a 2002 V6 camaro. I would try that before trying to repair one. And FYI there is no lubricant used for an EGR or IAC valves

Hey Chris, I did some more surfing on the net and found some more info. I believe the EGR is still good, otherwise the CEL would not come on and off. It may just need some cleaning as suggested. I found a link http://www.icess.ucsb.edu/~greg/rodeo/egr.htm about the EGR. I am not an auto mechanic but good in HVAC/R and electronics. How did you clean your EGR?

Jeff
