Greetings, all! 6-year Jeep owner, first-time member/poster!

Thinkin'/wantin' to/plannin' on going SOA on an 81 CJ5...this will be an all-show, very little go, Jeep...I MIGHT drive it through my yard occassionally, or take out a curb in the grocery store parking lot, but nothing hard core!!!

Is it possible to do an SOA using much of the factory components? (spring tie plates, flipped/rotated, of course, spring perches, shocks, springs)...i've been reading/researching this, and figured i'd best ask before i dive in!

can you all look at this image and tell me if my logic is on/off-base?

thanks!

[Linked Image]

(sorry, meant to ask these questions, too!)

in this example, would i need either:

1) longer springs (to raise the frame up high enough so that the lower shock eye can bolt to the spring tie plate, which is now ABOVE the axle)
2) shorter shock (so that the shock is short enough to mate to the spring tie plate)(i know, i know, just humor me, please!)
3) taller upper shock mount (so that the lower shock eye can mate to the spring plate and the upper shock eye can mate to the shock mount/frame)

do you "need" longer shocks?

this will be a daily-driven, street jeep, i like the lifted/soa look and want to reuse as many parts currently on the jeep as i can!

and does it matter that the perch mount, does not have a CONVEX surface to match the CONCAVE area on the spring pack?

link just goes to a page with "Hosted by tripod". there is no image.

You should get new u-bolts after taking the old ones off. The rest of it I'm not sure about. Good to see someone else with an 81 CJ5...but mine is a beater, but all the better!

I will also be doing an SOA eventually. If you decide to do it let us know how it goes. And if you will be doing it yourself, a write up, and maybe some pics would be greatly appreciated.

Mine wasn't a beater, 'til I started "tinkerin'" with it! Does yours have the tailgate? Shoulder belts? Any rhyme or reason to which ones had the tailgate or what year they officially went to shoulder belts?

I plan on doing a write-up, complete with pics, i've got all the "before's", just waitin' to get all the info before i get my hands dirty!

Mine came with lap belts, but I put shoulder belts in myself. The person I bought the Jeep from welded the tailgate shut...he had an under seat tank in the back, and the filler neck went through the tailgate. I removed the rear seat and the extra tank.

I'm sure someone will chime in to answer your questions about the SOA. I am interested to know as well. Keep us updated on any progress. Good luck.

Using lift springs on a SOA will make for too much lift.
the soa alone with oe springs is good for 4-5" lift. add 4" lift springs on a CJ5 and you won't be able to get a driveshaft in it and it will tip in a strong wind.

The reasons for going soa are better creek bed boulder (Rubicon trail)crawling. SOA hurts perfomance in Moab Farmington type trails because of axle wrap.
wrap hurts on the street too.

Traction links help but do not eliminate the issue.

SOA if done well adds lots of flex, so, longer shocks for sure. No, OE axle side u bolt plates are not reusable for shock mounting.
Use new u bolts, harware and perches.

Steering is the main hang up with DIY soa, bending a drag link to "fit" is where u tube vids come from. Have a pro design and build a safe steering system.
(A pro in this area is not an alignment tech at Big O)
Jeep builders who build SOAs and steering systems everyday are pros.

When I do my SOA...eventually...I'll be using new stock springs. I just want to run 35's...maybe 37's at some point. But I plan on doing some body panel cutting.

Speaking of Farmington...I just met my business partners aunt and uncle who live in Farmington. They are not into wheeling, but they said we could go and visit them and go wheeling, and they would take us out on their cigarette boat!

Apparently they see buggies from their back yard all the time. Can't wait to get my vehicle running again! So close!

That's what I planned on. I don't have the tools to do it myself anyway. Not to mention, that will be done later on, not too soon in the future.
