Not sure if this applies to Toyota or not but some mfr's put a spacer between the mounting surface and the fuel pump so that the lobe on the little cam that runs the pump wont over compress the arm. I don't remember what kind of vehicle it was but some one I know was eating up fuel pumps pretty fast. So fast that he actually always carried 1 or 2 spares until one day he figured it out when he was looking under the hood of some one else's truck and then that was the end of his fuel pump woes. Its worth looking into?

Actually with the spacer, I would think it would affect the tension the fuel pump lever would have against the lobe (sorry, can't remember the proper term)
It's weird you're going thru them tho'-- I replaced my first one at 192K; diaphragm died. My NAPA replacement is still goin' strong.

Thanks,
Scebr Actually considering it was pushing against the FPR AND you weren't running the spacer I'm amazed it lasted as long as it did. The spacer is going to keep the pressure down some anyway (just plain less tension = less pressure I assume). You may have gotten lucky with a fairly robust one that put up with it for a while, the other spares may not be so forgiving. I think I'd go back to the spacer, and the FPR since I hear the Webbers get really pissy without it. Also, spares are never as good as new. 23100-39336, 65.52 @ 1sttoyotaparts.com, comes with new gaskets and spacer...

Well heres the thinker:
The first pump I blew was the newer style pump which I have never seen have a spacer. The 2nd pump I blew was an older style pump. Maybe the 1st one blew from old age and the 2nd one blew because it was supposed to have a spacer? I've never seen a spacer on a pump, but I have also never seen an older style pump installed. Maybe only the older ones come with spacers??

You need to have the spacer between the head and fuel pump or you will damage the fuel pump.

scerb you sure your old pump didn't have a spacer? it's entirely possible that it fell out while we were changing it on the trail at 2 in the morning by cell phone light...

Both my 83 and my 86 have the fuel pump spacers.
Sounds like ya lost it during the trail fix.
