I think i have a coolant leak somewhere in the rear of the 22re engine. i know it not from the heater hoses and yesterday after driving home from work it almost overheated. After i got home and check i heard a hissing sound from the back... could it be from the rear plate on back of the head? when i installed my head i didn't put any silicone on the gasket. could it possibility be that?

well, then you have a leak *somewhere* & the hissing is the best clue you've got. The plate shoud seal with just the gasket, but I use permatex #2 on most every gasket & I can't recall ever having a leak.

One of the easiest ways I have found to check thing out between the engine and the firewall is to take the hood off.

That radiator stop leak powder isn't a very strongly recommended fix, even if you don't have much money. You'll be revisiting that later on. Be aware.
