Need a Spot
Hi guys I'm new here with a question for ya. Got a 85 4 runner that has just recently started running flat at about 3000 rpm and then the next day it dropped a cylinder and by time I got home with it, it was only running on 2 cylinders. I have fire and we checked compression and it was 150,150,150, and 125. How bad is that? The #2 and #3 cylinders are the ones not working so I am lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Search on this forum for "injector hatrness splice" and see if that applies.

Another possibility is a failed headgasket. Not sure if you tested compression with all the plugs removed, but if Roger's suggestion to check the injector wiring harness comes back OK, this is the next thing I would check. Losing two cylinders next to each other always makes me suspicious of the HG.

If you have a 25 psi drop in one cyl than you have a prob there, cheak for coolant/oil lose with blue or black smoke. A good test is start the truck with the radiator cap removed, if water comes out of the radiator when you are turning over the engine thats a blown head.

Pull the plugs,or if you remember, what color were the tips?

How do you know that?

You have one seriously low cylinder & 3 that are in less than new condition, but OK. My guess would be a head gasket failure on the low cylinder.

"How do you know that?"
When I pull the plug wires off of those cylinders the engine doesn't change at all but when I pull one of the other 2 it wants to die.

If the engine is the one that came in the runner it has 328,000 on the odometer. It is probably due for some problems. Alright I will give all of your suggestions a look and see what I come up with when I have a chance to look at it. I will report back with my findings. Thanks.

If you can, do a leak down test, as it will give you a better idea of what's going on in the cylinder and why.

A cylinder needs 3 things to fire... Fuel, Spark and Compression... sounds like you've got 2 of the 3 (mostly)...

Had a very similar situation w/my 4runner... turned out to be injectors were clogged due to PO neglect... sent them out to Cruzin Performance and bada bing, no more running on 2 cylinders... you didn't say if this vehicle was a new acquisition or one that you've had for a while... its also a great opportunity to change out the fuel filter too...

Did you adjust teh valves after the compression check. Those numbers aren't that bad for an engine 1/320k on it, anything above 125(or 129) is still within specs. If the comp numbers don't change after a valve adjustment, it would be time to do a rebuild, you normally don't want the cyls. to be more than 20psi difference in compression.

If the head gasket was gone you should have less compression than that, below 50psi.

Assuming you have a 22re, I would also have to lean towards clogged injectors on the #2 and #3 cyls., bad injectors, or wiring. Since you have compression and spark, you aren't getting gas into the cyls. Also the running flat above 3k would seem to indicate a possible fuel delivery problem.

Have you checked the timing?

I have plans this weekend to change the fuel filter and check out the injectors. How can I find out if the injectors are clogged or if there is an electrical problem with them. 4Crawlwer mentioned and injector harness splice and I couldn't find any info on it. Any ideas?
