I have a 1995 T100 SR5 that I have been chasing a starting issue.. I have read one way to tell if the issue is with the fuel pump check valve is to turn the key on (without starting) for about 10-15 seconds 3 or 4 times and then try.. Supposedly this cycles the fuel pump to put pressure in the system.. My question is, should you hear the fuel pump cycle when you do this? I tried this today and mine makes no noise at all! Nothing! When I try to start the truck after doing this it still cranks and cranks.. I thought you should be able to hear the pump when doing this??? Thanks for any help!

Not sure about your T, but my 2001 Taco doesn't energize the fuel pump until the ECU gets a "STA" signal from the starter circuit. This means that the fuel pump won't start to run until you turn the key to "Start," and crank the engine.

On my Taco, it is possible to replace the fuel cut relay with a jumper wire which will override the ECU and run the fuel pump whenever the key is on. This is okay for testing, but unsafe for driving, as an accident that compromises the fuel system would cause the fuel pump to empty the tank onto the ground under your wrecked truck (at least until you killed the ignition). The ECU senses if the engine is still running, and cuts the fuel pump via the fuel cut relay if the engine stalls (or if it detects certain other malfunctions -- like repeated misfires, or hiccups in the ignitor circuit).

The fuel cut relay on my Taco is on the lower right corner of the under-dash fuse panel. Not sure where it might be on your T. Good luck!

After it cranks and cranks, it starts up and chugs some black smoke out the tailpipe.. On an immediate restart, it starts right up.. It happened the other day at a friends house and he said "it smells like your flooding it".. You can smell the raw fuel in the air (nasty) after it chugs the black smoke then it is fine.. Runs like a top, great gas mileage (22mpg) just wants to have this starting issue.. I have changed the fuel pump, fuel filter, O2 sensors, cat converter, plugs, plug wires, cleaned the MAF sensor and most recently the fuel lines.. I wonder if something wasn't hooked back up properly when the new fuel lines were installed but since you can smell the raw fuel, it makes me think it is a spark issue and I am thinking about having the starter rebuilt.. Has 155k miles on it, a '95.. Spent alot of cash chasing this issue, although with 155k on the truck, most needed done anyway.. This is why I have gone to this forum cause you folks know a whole lot more than I do! Thanks for any additional info!

In order to eliminate the fuel system as the cause of your problem you need to do a complete fuel pressure test. You check fuel pressure in the fuel rail when running(38-44psi with regulator vacuum hose disconected at idle and 33-38 with vacuum hose conected)then check to see that the system holds 21+psi for a minimum of 5 minutes. If you loose pressure in that 5 minutes it means you have a bad fuelpump check valve or leaky fuel injector(s).Unfortunatly Toyota does not make this test a simple one.You need a special adapter that hooks up to the banjo fitting on the fuel rail.I have gone back and looked at some of your old posts and with the flooding-raw gas smell you describe I suspect you may have a leaky fuel injector(s).

Symptoms sound like leaky fuel injector(s). Black smoke and gas smell indicates its rich and/or flooded with too much fuel. The injector(s) are probably just leaking into the intake when the truck sits for a while, so there is a bunch of extra fuel in there when you go to start it again later, which has to be cleared out before it will lean out enough to start and run again (extra cranking).

On my project car I did not have any leaks, just clogs, I used the witchhunter.com injector service and am extremely happy with the results. I sent him 8 injectors, he sent the same 8 back, with new plastic parts, filters, and o-rings, along with documentation that there was a 7% flow variance coming in and he got them all within 1/2 %. This all cost as much as one new injector.

I don't know what he can do about leaks but if the valve is not closing due to dirt then they should be able to fix it.

My only gripe is that they beadblast the metal bodies and I had to mask & paint them. I am no good at painting and I hate painting.

That fuel pump gets it's juice from the circuit opening relay. That relay has 2 seperate coils to energize it and fire up the fuel pump. Initially, with the ignition in the start position, the start relay supplies 12V to one coil and the relay closes. That give enough gas to get it going. Then, if the computer, etc. decides the engine is running, the second coil is energized through the EFI relay and the pump keeps going. That way the pump won't keep spewing fuel if the engine dies. It is a safety feature. So, no-just turning the key to ignition won't run the fuel pump. But from the black smoke it sounds like you are getting fuel.

That's what I thought.. The black smoke indicates fuel but now I understand the leaky fuel injector situation.. The only period of time when it fired right up time after time was when I took a 650 mile trip in it and poured some LUCAS injector cleaner/treatment in the tank prior to filling up for the trip.. It started perfect for 2 tanks after that then back to the crank/crank/crank--black smoke.. Would seafoam help?

its my understanding that its good practice to replace the plugs when doing any fuel system cleaning, heard it can foul them up a bit...???
