I will be buying my first 4x4. It will be used. I am not sure whether it will be from a deal or a private party. I was wondering what the acceptable way to test 4x4 out before I buy it is. I just want to make sure it is operable. Actually it will be the first 4x4 I have ever driven. Thanks in advance.

I am guess we are talking 4 wheeler? Or any 4 wheel drive vehicle?

As with any purchase of a used vehicle, do your research.

Check the forums for issues related to the type of vehicle you are considering.

As to "testing it out", that is between you (the buyer) and the seller as to what they will permit before you sign on the line....

I have to agree with what was said about testing it out (its up to the owner). But I do know you should at least do a basic engage test (put it in 4Lo, 4Hi, and disengage), they should have no issue with that.

Thank you for your replies. Since I have never even driven a 4x4 (besides a 4wheeler), I am really not sure how I will know if it is working. Will it make a sound when it is engaged? Is there a way to tell that it is ok? Thanks again!

I will be purchasing a 1999-2003 pickup truck.

If it's working you can feel it in the steering wheel. It will seem like it wants to go straight when you turn. If you're on pavement go real slow and listen out the window for the front tires as they sort of push against the road and slide when you turn. I'm sure there should be some kind of indicator on the instrument panel as well but they can fail even if the front is turning.

Good luck and let us know when you get one.

Time to head to the dealer and check out one from their used lot then. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
