Gearing question...it's been a while #839705 10/04/07 03:57 AM

Hello all,

I haven't been here in a over a year...graduating, job, marriage, moving, and little time for offroading have contributed to that. But I'll be around occasionally. The 90 is staying a farm/chore/hauling truck and my new offoad toy is a Jeep TJ (fingers crossed).

My question:

The 90 currently has 4.56's and 32's on it (22RE, 5 speed). I think I'm going to swap the 225/75's from my Jeep with the 32's and bring the 90 back to stock size. This will make my parents happy, since they thought it was the loudest thing they have ever ridden in.

My question is, how bad will the engine scream with 4.56's and 28" tires? Or on the contrary, will power be awesome while also being manageable on the highway? It is only driven on the highway maybe once a month, otherwise just country roads and dirt paths. But sometimes it's on the highway for an hour or more at a time.

When I get a chance, I'll probably swap the 4.10's back in and sell the 4.56's, since the Toyota will never be a DD. I guess I just wanted some opinions. I think the 4.56/28" combo is very similar to 5.29/33".

Thanks!

Around the farm it wouldn't be bad running tires 3 sizes smaller than what it is geared, though you will be giving up ground clearance and contact patch for traction when going to the smaller tire. On the highway you will be screaming, probably in the mid 5k's at 55 mph.

If you want to see how it will work swap out the tires and take it for a spin, you will have all the first hand info you need.

I would just sell the tires from the TJ and put a set of used 31 MT's on the Toy, and leave the 4.56's in it. Besides you never know when you might need the Toy as a trail truck, or if the TJ doesn't work out for you as a trail rig.

More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else.

I was thinking about the cheap 31's for the 90 route, but I'm trying to be super cheap. And I still have the 4.10's I can swap.

5000 rpm at 55??? It runs like 3300 at 75 now, with a tire that's 10% smaller, I should only be at 3600 or so at 75. And a bit less at 65 or so.

You would be turning a little over 3000 @ 65 w/ 4.56 gears and 28" tires and 3500 @ 75:

Thanks, Roger.

This makes me think that I would be alright. With the new clutch, it will probably smoke'em in 1st!

One last thing: I think the 1990 uses a speedo gear. Where can I get one to recalibrate if I like the setup? How many teeth would I want?
