I'm in the process of swaping out my Mitsubishi transfer case for an NP231. In the process I was planning on replacing my 5-speed transmission with a new one only to find out that Mitsubishi is back ordered in Japan and they don't know when I can get one.

Does anyone have information or ideas on a swap to a different 5/6-speed manual transmission? My ideas was to swap to the NV4500 but I can't find any info.

I don't know about adapting American stuff. Seems like out ctransfer cases are pretty dang tought, only wear out on therear output tailpiece bushing.

There was a guy in OK City with a place called Aierial Performance. Dead or out of bisiness, He had a couple palletes of New V5MT1 or 1-2s. Sold on Ebay. Sure would be good to have a detective in those parts to track down who he sold the business to. Dang it I missed on that one. One of the folks on here got one from him. They're dang though transmission , I preferr to stay with mine.

The Mitsu t-cases ARE tough. I've got about 200k miles on mine now without any major issues. Had to replace the rear output yoke a couple weeks ago because that finally wore out but otherwise it's been good. The problem with the t-cases is the lack of low range gear choices - like that's news. 2.85:1 is OK but not quite deep enough. The TerraFlex Low231 4:1 conversion for the NP231 is a much better ratio choice for me. AND, I can get an entire new NP231 with the supershort SYE and Low231 for $2400 ready to install. If I blow the hell out of it in Moab I can buy a replacement there for a couple hundred dollars, install it in a couple hours and be on my way. They're dirt cheep, solid and easy to support anywhere. That my mantra.:-)

And, even that doesn't concern me as much as Mitsubishi stoping production on the MK 5-speed manual transmission transfer case and half the parts in the MK 5-speed transmission.

That was the big news for the day.:-( Mitsubishi no longer manufactures the 5-speed manual transmission transfer case. The rights to reproduce the t-case have been sold off to "Vintage Reproduction Parts" or something like that. And, at least half of the parts in the 5-speed transmission are also unavailble from Mitsubishi. Same thing. The rights to reproduce those parts has been sold to some other company - the same one that bought the rights to the t-case. The worst part is that a good number of the 5-speed transmission parts are not availble EXCEPT through Mitsubishi dealership parts departments. I had a quote on an entire rebuild and install of a 5-speed through the Mitsubishi dealership I deal with and the quote was for just less than $3700.00 - and that is with my discount on the parts added in.:-(

The MK 5-speed transmissions are getting hard to come by. Or maybe it's just me but I've spent about 8 hours on the phone in the last two days and I've only found 4 transmissions nation wide. And one place wasn't even really sure that it wasn't an automatic.

I agree Dave. Since they fixed the problems the old manual transmissions had it seems like a good trans. However, I'm on transmission number 2 now and this one is getting ready to blow up into tiny pieces. Believe me, they're not indestructable. Not that I blame Mitsu. I don't think they had in mind rock crawling in 105 degree weather with a vehicle that weighs in at 6400 now.:-)

I did finally settle this afternoon on picking up another rebuilt 5-speed (and they're giving me a loaner trans->t-case adapter for a template) just so my truck stays driveable. I'll work on the tramsmission swap this year after they finish the t-case adapter.

I did finish working out all the details of the 5-speed manual transmission t-case swap last week. Including a way to keep the stock shifters and shifter locations.

Whoa, I just read something on Outer limits $x$ by an Ausie.

He says the V5MT1 has a bigger case than the V5MT1-2.
If that's so I'm glad I didn't buy one. The 1-2 is the same size as the 4 bangers.

You know, at this point I don't know what the differences are. I've gotten so many different stories on the 5-speed from so many places - including Mitsu themselves - that I don't know what to think or believe now. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

I'm just hoping the one that's being rebuilt now actually fits. I have a BAD feeling that I'm going to end up with something that doesn't even bolt in.

Let me correct my post,,I' only have 30 min. on this Public computer so I print it out and answer the next day ,,,I make a lot of mistakes this way.

I dyslexicly read the Transmission # on the Canadian/Japanese/Ausie conversation over there.,

I have a V5MT1 Gen 1,,,Gen 2 had V5MT1-2 , basicaly the same, really don't know the difference, I imagine it's improved synchros.

Thier post was Compatability of gears between V5MT1 and V5M"21". That trans has the bellhousing and trans as one piece. Basicly an upgraded of the MT use in U.S. 2.6 model .
I don't think it was used in N.A.

I agree aboutthe T-case not having a low enough ratio, even for the mild stuff I do. I wasn't thinking that you had fixed yours up for crawling.

I'm concerned about Mitsu selling of the Trans and T-cases.
This most likely means that the parts if ever available would be made in China , and not worth having. I'll probably go ahead and get the countershaft bearings and synchros in stock , these seem to be the weakest links on daily drivers,, , now knowing about this. Thanks for the heads up.

Changing tran/t-case , I don't have any obtion for my CA daily driver. I've pipe dreamed about total mods , like GM 4.3 or a diesil. Swap out everthing to something that matches up and has more gearing options.

Check out this 3000GT for sale on EBAY, he's using a turbo 400 with a montero flywheel, Montero bell housing and a custom adapted torque converter and adapter plate, the plate was home made, basically just a plate of aluminum with holes drilled in it. the torque converter was made by BTW performance.

All in all he told me it wasnt that expensive. and it would solve a lot of problems for people. For you i know many people mix match clutches to adapt different transmissions to their cars..

Yea, that would. I really hate to switch to a auto - I LIKE my 5-speed - but ... getting to be a real pain. I got my Sport back this afternoon. I got extremely lucky. The clutch disk needed to be replaced - cracked disk hub and 'bout to loose a couple springs - and they found one place in Denver that actually had a whole kit. Summit's Centerforce won't ship 'til 2/6, Mitsu is 1 1/2 weeks out and even Carquest is over a week. Retail outlets all say the same thing - don't stock it because no one ever buys one.:-(

That's funny. I was talking to a buddy about dumping a TH400 or something like that into my Sport last Friday.

I don't remember on the coils but I have a PN#. I'll look that up and post it. If I remember correctly it's stock Ford 1/2 ton + 2.5" lift. They're fairly stiff, too. The guys at the shop still think I should replace those with a squishier set (better articulation) but I LIKE them where they are. Mine handles better than my X's 1999 Limited Sport on the road and since that's where it spends the majority of its time I don't have much incentive to change them.

Alcan in Grand Junction, CO does my leaf springs. There isn't a specific part number since they custom build the springs specifically for your vehicle.

The GOOD part is they have three different configurations now which have been tested - extensively <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> - so other than lift, the GVW when you're 'wheeling, and the t-case gears (1.92 stock or 2.85/3.15 from AU) there isn't much they need to know. They run about $450 a set with shipping and it includes a set of poly bushings. You'll need custom bolts for the front eyes which I can have made here (they're greasable, too). We don't use the Mitsu front eye bushings - switched to standard Toyota leaf bushings. Alcan and I spent 4 hours trying to find anything that would replace the formed in Mitsu bushing and just gave up.

The pack I have now is 8 leaves including a torque leaf to control axle wrap. Leafs are a combo of 6, 7 and 8mm. This design is very specific to my Sport and probably severe overkill for anyone else. The combo of a vehicle that weighs in at 6400 GVW on the trail, the insane tracaction on the slick rock in Moab with the Yoko Geolandars, the spring over in the back and the t-case (2.85) and diff (5.39) gearing was snaping the primary and secondary leafs faster than I could get them built.

If you do get a set built somewhere make sure they do the military wrap on the front eye. THAT has saved me from giant tow bills three times in the last two years.
