keep a watch for a letter in the mail. Your not supposed to know about it but a "small" number of Tacoma frames may not have sufficient corrosion protection and may either be replaced or the vehicle bought back. Toyota is not sure yet. this is from a good source.

After noodlin' around, this is an EXTENDED warranty by Toyota, whether you are the original owner of your Taco or not. More: Toyota's Blog Sticky please!

For Runner owners in these same years, I did ask the question, and got this reply off the blog:
I do have a question; would this also apply to the same range of years in the 4Runner? Thanks.
Posted by: MDS in AK | March 09, 2008 at 07:52 PM
Hi, MDS -
Thanks for your comment. In reference to the frames on our 4Runner SUVs, the following:
The Toyota 4Runner and Toyota Tacoma are built at different plants (Tacoma is built in Northern California, 4Runner is built in Japan), and have different suppliers for the frame. Therefore, this condition may be present only in the Toyota Tacoma vehicles.
We hope this answers your question.
- OpenRoadMaster
Additionally, if you Taco owners have already had frame repair attempts, this extended warranty STILL applies to you, so get on in to the dealer and ask about it. Wouldn't hurt to take the blog url with you when you go visit.

Guess this means there are going to be alotta toyota frames coming up for availability for the offroad enthusists. 800,000 vehicals... that should bring the price of frames down a bit. Awsomeness.

I just learned of a guy with a '98 with only 98k on it, had the frame crack in front of the pass side rear wheel. He traded it in on a new CRV and the stealership didnt notice the crack.

So I emailed a friend who is sales manager at a Toyota shop back home:
Me-"You all seeing many of these buy back? About how many since the start of the campaign?
Him-"I have a graveyard out back, nearly 100 trucks"
This is for an 2007 MSA of 160,656 with 2 Toyota dealerships. Incredible.

I have to wonder how many trucks Toyota is buying back. Every day like clockwork I see two Tacos going by on a flatbed to the boneyard. Said boneyard is 1/4 mile from my house! Im assuming the frame-rot is isolated to the rustbelt where road salt is the cause. Im just curious as to how many states are classified as the rust belt?

The local shop here said that most she's heard of are from WV, having been bought or spent time there.
My buddy's shop is in Marietta, OH. Right across the river from WV, and he's got over 100 buy backs.

Some bad news on parting out the recalled Tacos. My local boneyard has hundereds of them and they cant part out anything. Not even a fiberglass cap. Essentially Toyota owns these vehicles and is paying the yard to crush them. Talk about a waste! Every morning I pass a car carrier with five perfectly good Tacos on their way to the grave.

Took mine in Monday. Sniffed around the lot till I found the Tacoma Morgue. 12 units. Looked to fairly represent the whole year spectrum. Noticed at least 5 95's 96's and 2 99s.
Crawled underneath and saw very bad rot on the areas where the body mounts are, and the arch over the rear wheels. Some looked like I had tried welding them and covering them with Wal*marx rattle can underbody coating...:o
Wrench unloading the autorack said Toyota is cutting a hole in the oil pan, running it till they seize up, slashing tires and running them through the hammer shredder.
I'm happy to report that no tears were shed, and my truck is sitting outside as we speak.
er...type.

A friend from work babied his '00 Tacoma, washed it every weekend, took really good care of it (for Upstate NY). Took it in for an alignment - it was shaking like crazy, he didn't care, but the wife didn't like it. They called him on his cell "you need to come back, we have a problem..." Long story short, they bought it on the spot, gave him the loaner til he heard from Toyota corporate, the next week he got a check. He says the dealer described the buyback like this - go to KBB.com, find your vehicle, set the mileage to 'zero', the condition to 'excellent', calculate the retail value (the value the dealer can sell it for), then multiply it by 150%. He got a check for $17,200 for a '00 with 158,000 miles. Too bad his wife already picked the new Prius... Yeah, I think I'll let the nice man hit my frame with the 16oz hammer... Eric PS - the trucks go to the boneyard, but the owner can strip off what they want before they go - if they'll take her, my '95 will go with bald tires on steel rims, no cap and missing the grill guard and rear bumper...

1) It's not a recall; it's an extended warranty issue.
2) It's not a Tacoma. Answer is no.

FYI: There's now solid evidence for a new frame rust campaign on 2001 - 2004 Tacomas. The initial announcement is quoted in this thread: http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=1134417

Sold my 2000 Taco back to Toyota for $20700. Took that money and bought a 2005 Taco with the 4.0 and love it.

For those who still have frames that are in nice shape, I see Trail Gear has come up with some frame gusseting kits. http://www.trail-gear.com/tacomaI might consider this, given I'm working on making the Taiga Taco a dedicated camper rig.

I still need to plate my rear frame. The front is beefed up from the axle swap. Like you said, a very good idea for a camper rig.

Toyota did come up with a frame swapout over doing a buy-back. $$$. The local dealer is still trying to mooch me out of my 2004.
