i just helped my bother inlaw change the starter on his 3.4 4wd limited 4runner, it was a nightmare. we ended up dropping the steering rack and pulling it out that way, after we pulled the swaybar too. wow, the crappy manual just told us to unbolt and remove. yea, thats pretty generic, and not even close to what we had to do. c-ya

Yea, its a pita. But droping the rack? Never heard of that. You should be able to remove the collector pipe right after the header and get it out that way.

Did you actually replace the starter, or just rebuild it? 90% chance it was just the contacts

X2 on the pita. I can see how dropping the rack would work. I guess the other options are to take the collector pipe off like adam said, unbolt and lift the motor a bit, or take the compressor off if you have a/c and slide it out the front.
I just ran into this crap yesterday. I was doing a motor swap so I just lifted the motor a bit.
