CAn you swap a ADD unit for a regular axle tube axle and tube? I have manual hubs. I thought I say a post for it before but can not find it.

I did it and the swop makes for a clean & sound system. However if I had to do it over again, i'd look hard at a full time locker option, and a switch to turn the actuator/shaft on / off. Would make it the operate like an elec / arb.

Would make it the operate like an elec / arb. That would not make it a locker; it would still work on the Differential action of one or the other wheel driving. Unless it has an LSD or locker, the wheel with the least traction will spin. A four wheel drive without lockers or LSD is actually only two wheel drive, one in front one in back hence the reason for LSDs, lockers, spools, or welded.

Yes, just did one a few weeks ago. You will need to get a seal for the centre section where the non-ADD tube bolts on. You will also need a slide hammer to pull the axle out of the centre section as there is a spring-type ring in a groove in the axle that mates with a groove in the diff.

my comment was based on upgrading the differential.

Does the ADD introduce any mechanical weakness to the axle that is not there in a non-ADD axle? I was not thinking of actuators, vacuum lines, etc., just the actual drive system.

When I had mine apart, the ADD shaft was smaller than the non-ADD unit. I'm thinking the non-add is the stronger setup of the two.

It seems to me that the easiest route would be to just get a complete non-ADD third assemebly and change the whole thing, then all you have to do is replace the hubs and block off the engine vacuum lines. Granted, you have to acquire the assembly, but they can be found at junkyards for $125 or so, complete.
