My 89 3.0 Failed Smog test today.

15MPH Max-999 Measured- 3544

25MPH Max-859 Measured-3239

CO2, O2, HC and CO were all well under...I know ray recently had this issue with his 89 and I believe he replacesd his cat and O2 sensor.

I've never replaced the o2 sensor so I'll probably do that. The cat looks like its been replaced before but it could be a cheap aftermarket unit that could have gotten partially clogged before I changed the vvalve guide seals..Advice is appreciated.

Also what brand/supplier have you guys used for your O2 sensors? I'm looking for one I can plug and play with. I dont want to splice the wire. Thanks.

Justice,

Look at my smog numbers below...I cut/pasted from my thread "Poor Response when Accelerating"

kela

PASSED smog today !!!

smog test: 12/2008
%CO2 %O2 HC(PPM) CO(%) NO(PPM) Results
MEAS MEAS MAX GP MEAS MAX GP MEAS MAX GP MEAS
15 mph 12.5 3.3 118 305 30 .68 1.98 .01 999 1776 1897 GROSS POLLUTER
25 mph 12.4 3.4 98 255 23 .87 2.17 .01 859 1576 1578 GROSS POLLUTER

smog test: 1/2009
15 mph 15.4 0.0 118 35 24 .68 .11 .09 999 332 253 PASS
25 mph 15.4 0.0 98 24 19 .87 .09 .08 859 274 393 PASS

Final thoughts:
Smog test: replacing cat converter & O2 sensor helped PASS CA emissions.
Poor acceleration performance: replacing fuel tank/fuel pump/fuel filter cleared up 'fuel flow/restriction' somewhere along in the fuel delivery system.

Thanks to Russell (aka rxinhed) for his help with the "used parts in good working condition" (tank/pump).

Kela, Thanks for the info. What brand/supplier did you use for the 02 sensor?

I believe it was a NGK/NTK...I think NTK makes the O2 sensors for NGK.

It was plug/play...no splicing wires.

Justice,

I'd send a PM to Clay. He has limited online access right now so that might be the quickest way to get his response.

Sorry, I wish I could add more regarding why both the O2 and the Cat were required but I just don't recall/know.

Ok will do..Did some digging after work today and this is what I found...

2 vacuum lines in the EGR system were intensionally clogged with BB's??? I'm assuming this was some PO's bright Idea on how to bypass the system? Still not sure that removing the BB's fixed the problem. There does not seem to be any vacuum to to the EGR. I need to study the system further to see exactly how and when its suppossed to actuate. I broke the nipples off the "thermo valve" when I was messing with the vacuum lines, so I'll have to order that from the stealer.

Looking at your numbers, It appears the only thing that failed is the NOX, correct?
If so, this is more than likely related to the EGR.

Strange thing is, that on my recently aquired 89 Raider, the vacuum hose at the EGR was also plugged with BB???
Furthermore, I found the port from the EGR to intake totaly plugged.

Even with a functioning EGR, if the exhaust/intake port(s) is plugged, it will likely fail NOX.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. Yes NOX was the only catagory it failed and failed badly ..Now if we could only find out who is this guy going around plugging our vac lines with BB's I'll give the whole system a once over this weekend and replace the O2 sensor just for GP.
