Engnbldr is the only one I buy timing chain sets from anymore. I've never had a problem with his stuff unlike other brands out there that wore out in less than a year.

(cough) bought my rebuild kit from EB (cough) 3 years ago or so. It's just that stupid plastic guide issue, only had about 15000 miles on it though, (shrug), that's what ticks me off. Just got through with a clutch job and this pops up. It's just a bad design from Toyota, they should of used metal backed ones to begin with.

The one's I got from EB were metal backed, but I just bought the timing kit, not the whole rebuild.

Finished up the guide replacement last night. EB dosn't have the guides for the 83/84, but he told me to watch out for companies passing off the shorter ones as the ones that fit. I found the correct metal backed guides from partsdinosaur.com, great service and quality parts. The whole timing chain kit was only $44.00, with Japanese made parts. I replaced the tensioner with the one in the kit, the one I had when I pulled it off was very hard to compress, as well as stuck in some spots, so that may have been part of the problem. Truck runs great again, here's a pic of the old guide, much of it was in the oil pan. ![[Linked Image]](http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_images/2/3398/641/20992820109_medium.jpg)

Just a little heads up, when the chain guides have broken the chain sometimes makes grooves in the timing chain cover. Be observant on the oil so no water makes it through the grooves.

I love my truck...I HATE my truck Got home today, drove the truck to and from work and ran Awesome. Popped the hood just to make sure all was good and saw a oil leak down the front, figured crap, leaky gasket or something. The something is the timing chain cover is cracked where the bolt from the head bolts to the top of the timing chain cover, so now for the third time in as many months I'll need to tear it all down, after shelling out $150 for a new timing chain cover. If I had a cliff nearby I'd be tempted to roll the truck over it. Thanks for listening to my rant, needed to blow off some steam, good part is I'm practically a pro at taking off the timing chain cover.

I'll check the FSM, my book just says all 8mm bolts are 9 ft lbs., and all the 10mm are 29 ft. lbs., worked fine the 3 previous times I had this thing off. I'd like to pay that much for the cover, but I don't want some cheap Chinese knockoff that dosn't fit right, I'll do some more checking around before I pick one up.

Yeah, the early covers are gettin' harder to find these days. Ya might check car-part.com for 82-84 Celicas too.

Just checked the FSM, it says 9 ft. lbs. as well for that bolt, which is what I torqued it to. Anyone ever used Japan engines inc. to get parts off of ebay? They have one for $74.00, they have good feedback and are out of San Francisco, maybe I'll give them a shot.
