4th bulb in tail light assembly? #940625 04/16/09 12:27 AM

Had to replace my brake lights today and saw a 4th lightbulb in the tail light assembly, smaller than the rest all the way at the bottom in the brake light area. What is it for? Dosn't light up at all and is not even shown in my manual. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cyclops.gif" alt="" />

It comes on with the tail lights, probably to light up the side of the lens:

Hmmm, cool, Thanks Roger. I thought it might be something like that, the bulb looks good, I'll throw a meter on it, maybe the housing is corroded.

Some information below:

Backup LED is much better than stock due to the narrow beam focus. Brake/running lights not quite as bright as stock but adequate. But since they are colored, overcome the fading of the plastic lens and also if you happen to break a lens wheeling, you are still legal with a red light in back.

Yes, handy thing to have at least colored bulbs in there in case the lens gets broken. Had one of my fronts crack last winter and I didn't worry about it until I could get a new housing worked up (I have the dual filament bulbs in mine for turn signals and parking lights - so not a stock housing).

Only problem with the colored bulbs is that in a year or two the colored plastic film on them flakes off and you end up with a plain white bulb. The LEDs stay colored for the life of the lamp.
