When driving on the open road and there is no load on the engine it goes quiet but knocking comes back under load. Any hypothesis on what can attribute to this noise? Im doing major service over the weekend but if i need to open the engine then I might just as well pull the motor and do it all at once. Deep knocking is never a good sign. Try adjusting the valves, look at the harmonic balancer for wobble, be open minded. I purchased a snazzy Gen I Montero for my wife last summer, it has bad rod knock.
