2002 4runner - difficult shifting when engine cold? #95212

I have a 2002 SR5 and have noticed since I bought it that when the engine is cold, such as after sitting overnight, the transmission has a difficult time shifting out of 2nd gear, into 3rd. Has anyone else noticed this as well? The service advisor says its normal behavior until the fluid warms up....I cannto believe this is normal for a $30,000 vehicle.

Yes this is very normal. Mine does the same thing. Basically what it's doing is hanging in each gear longer to help speed up the warming process as well as locking out 4th gear until the engine and tranny temps reach normal operating temperatures.

I have a 99 4Runner that does the same thing, although I don't remember it doing before. In the morning it will rev to 2500rpm before it shifts from 2nd to 3rd.

ilocan,

Why are you a "was" supercharged?

My 2000 does it, also. It usually warms up and acts "normal" after the first mile or so of driving.

It is programmed to do that to help heat up the catalytic converter faster to help reduce emmissions.

My old Pathfinder would not shift into OD until it was fully warmed up.

Actually, I posted the question before I emailed you about it, in case I didnt get any replies. Im amazed by all the activity, and have to admit - fairly disappointed for the first time in this vehicle. Something with this price tag should NOT do this. Men on the moon, computers selling for a paycheck, and viagra - but we cant figure out a way around this simple problem....I could be driving a '71 Plymouth if I wanted a vehicle that ran ruff in the morning.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the quick response, at least now I know Im not going crazy.
