Recently developed this annoying vibration/rattle that was more evident at a drive up window or next to a building.

It sounded like thin metal vibrating against something and i assumed it was the exhaust.

I crawled under the sporty but couldn't find anything obvious that would cause such a noise?

My exhaust is all orig w/273k miles so I assumed my muffler must have internal issues.

Took it to my buddy's exhaust shop and discovered a broken weld on the heat shield on top of the stock muffler!

So we cut that sucker off and problem solved!! Took less than 5 minutes to diag and fix with it in the air!!

Heat shield doesn't have a purpose in my opinion so if anyone experiences the same just cut the sucker off.

That heat shield is there for a purpose....So you don't catch fire or get burned up.

I don't know about you guys but where my muffler sits there's nothing even close to worry about.

Besides, the replacement muffler doesn't come with one so what now beotch

If you don't hear from me for a while you can assume the worst and post you told me so.

I'll be sure to have hot dogs and marshmallows on hand

While I do believe you should retain a heatsheild when possible, sometimes it is something the manufacturer has placed there JUST INCASE.. If you build thousands upon thousands of cars/trucks a year, you tend to play it safe to avoid being in a lawsuit with thousands upon thousands of angry Kia/Hyundai owners.. I don't think Kia/Hyu does it nearly as bad as our GM's though. The exhaust should be sufficiently cooled by a foot or so after the 2nd cat as to not to catch anything (ie: interior insulation/carpet) on fire even if it's hot to touch. Pans are hot to touch out of the oven, yet you use your grandma's hand knit COTTON mittens to take out your pizza and the mittens didn't burn up did they!

I'm not going to speak for everyone but a heat shield application is not necessary on my rig for sure.

There is a huge void where it sits and nothing is close enough to be concerned about even if it were to get hot.

Like I said before, I'll carry plenty of hotdogs and marshmallows just in case
