This morning my neighbor drops over with his chain saw, asking if he can have some chain oil. Sure, not a problem.

I bring the saw into the shop and ask how it cuts. He mentions it seems kind of dull. It's a small electric saw not any killer unit.

So I take the chain off and turn it around to that the teeth rotate the right way and give it a quick sharpening.

He prunes a tree and has lot of small branches. He asks if he can borrow my wood chipper. I figure that safer than him taking my truck. Besides I'm just about to put a new engine on it, whats the worse that can happen?

About two hour later I hear a huge bang! I walk over to see the chipper grenaded with metal parts all over the place.

He forced a 2" branch into the leaf mulcher side. The side I told him to put only small stuff in.

I should have known better.

I really liked that chipper.

That sure sucks that he didn't listen to your directions with the chipper.

Did he offer to fix the unit?

I had to fix the neighborhood log splitter this fall 'cuz it went out to someone who wasn't 'one of us' (read: responsible). Put the word out about the bill; that won't happen again. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/butwiggle.gif" alt="" />

I was really trying to be nice... He has three kids and is a school teacher. The chain on backwards was a bit of a clue that he might not be good with tools. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/oink.gif" alt="" />


He did offer to replace the unit and said it would be great to get another one... so he could borrow it again! It goes like this, I find a used machine smae one I had before. He pays for that... He gets the broken one.

I just took it apart and the damage is incredible. The crankshaft is bent about 1/4". The chipper wheel has torn metal. And a bunch of bolts on the inlet housing sheered off.

On the leaf chopper side there is a small lawn more looking blade. When he forced a large branch into the opening it stopped the 20 lb flywheel just a bit too fast.

I'm more amazed he was able to get a ;arge branch in there.

Yep I agree, chain on backwards spoke volumes. Not only clueless but possibly a danger to himself!!

My next door neighbor is a Microsoft exec who recently asked me to show him how to change the oil in his car.

I started to visualize him jacking up the car and or using ramps then possibly forgetting a step (oil) ... advised him to stick with Jiffy Lube <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

I wouldn't give him the old chipper, he might try to fix it ! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cyclops.gif" alt="" />

When the small blade got jammed on the branch it bent backwards and caught the steel ring. The inertia of the cutter wheel sheered off six 3/8" bolts and ejected the ring from the machine.

This is for your neighbor.
