My upstanding neighbor said he would hit the ATM Friday to cover the cost of the chipper. Never dropped by with the cash. I didn't want to be tacky and ask for it but it seems like that's how he wants it to play out.
When we did talk about what it would cost I offered a discount. I figured it cost me $150, I sold the old one for scrap- $20. So $130 would be fair. That doesnt take into account the three hour drive to look at a used one, gas money time and hassle. I worked really hard to make this as inexpensive a problem as possible. Now I'm getting funny looks from him.

It's funny how people can be. I have another neighbor who's mower wouldn't stay running so I offered to take a look at it for him.
I turned it on it's side to look at the blade, that pretty much said it all. Couldn't tell the cutting side from the back! So I figured it hadn't been tuned in ages and proceeded to handle it for him. New plug, changed the oil, cleaned air filter, sharpened the blade and dialed in the carb. Old Snapper was running like new. Took about an hour and advised him all that I had done. I also advised he might want to replace the pull rope, was looking a bit warn. He didn't offer to cover my materials and barely thanked me.
3 weeks later the pull rope breaks and over he comes. Brings his broken mower and asks to borrow mine. I told him he could borrow my mower but he needed to take his to a repair shop.
2 weeks later he's back to borrow again. He said he didn't have time to take his mower in so I said this is the last time ... we don't talk much anymore.

Perfect example of the kind of neighbors that you do not need. I have only borrowed my neighbor's wheel barrel and before returning it I cleaned it up really good, sprayed with WD-40 and even armor-all'ed the tire
I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. That link is funny as hell.:o

I rarely borrow anything but when I do I'm the same way, give back as good or better than when you received it.
Plus, I typically accompany the return with a half rack a beer to show my appreciation!

He was happy to save himself the cost of a chipper by borrowing Kevin's, but now money is going the other way...

I will explain very nicely how this is a great thing for me and that in the long run it will save me a lot of time and money. This will also be a good opportunity to remind him that he "borrowed" three 1"x4"x8' cedar trim boards that he never replaced either.
Basically, don't bother to ever ask for another favor. His nickname for my garage is the tool Library. And I will make it a point to mention this to the two other neighbors that have loaned him tools in the past.
To be fair he did loan me a ladder for the summer... And I cleaned and returned it. He's a bit odd, but not too bad a guy, at least compared to his brother. His brother got sued for spraying the neighbors dogs with a skunk scent. Every time they got near his fence and no one was watching he would douse them. The owners though the dogs were always chasing skunks. They had to constantly wash their dogs.
Compared to him, he's a pretty nice guy.

His nickname should be the TOOL! Slight adjustment! His brother got sued for spraying the neighbors dogs with a skunk scent. Every time they got near his fence and no one was watching he would douse them. The owners though the dogs were always chasing skunks. They had to constantly wash their dogs. Where does one get skunk scent, would love to use that on my neighbor not his dogs

Yeah, I think as soon as your other neighbors get a heads up, he's on his own to PAY someone for their services.
Nice on the skunk scent. Friend of mine has two dogs starting to show up in the yard and growl at him; not cool with two little kids and summer on its way. I should make mention.
Come to think of it a neighbor's dog has started showing up in our yard; peed ON my kitchen steps. Hmmmmm..... his owner has only a 20x20 place....
