Need a Spot
Hey everyone, I'm new to the forum. My name is Zak and I'm from the Cleveland area. Over a year ago my focus got repoed and was in a crunch to get a car, so I picked up a 2000 2wd Sportage with 85000 on it for a grand. It's not in the best shape and has some rust by the tires above the wheels, but it's gotten me around and hasn't left me stranded. Best $1000 I'll probably ever spend. I installed all new speakers and sub and new tires when I got it, and recently changed the brake pads, oil, and air filter myself. A couple issues have arose and I was wondering if you guys could help me out. Keep in mind that don't want to put a whole lot of money into this.. I'm 19, going to college, and flipping burgers for a living at this point. I probably won't have this car for over the next two years. Oh and did I mention I don't want to sink alot of money into it?

First issue is the driver side (electric) window no longer works. It was slow when I got it, but it's gradually just stopped working. I was wondering what I'd need to fix this and how I'd go about it and wheather or not I'd want to take it to a shop or do it myself?

Second issue, is it's always rode like crap on these over salted crumbling Ohio roads, but I feel it's been getting worse. I think a ride on a raging bull would be smoother than the Kia going down Oberlin Ave some days. I talked to a buddy of mine who is a part time mechanic and he recommended new shocks and struts. I asked him about the springs, but he knows my money situation, so said I should just stick to the struts and shocks. I don't know if you guys know about "RockAuto" but I found shocks for $18 a piece and struts for $52 a piece, which is by far the cheapest I've found in my research. So to my questions.. First do you think getting new shocks and struts would make a decent difference in the ride? I really don't want to spend another $200+ on springs, but what would you do? In addition to getting the stuts and shocks, would I need to pick up things like coil spring seat, coil spring insulator, strut bellow, strut mount, or strut mount bushing?

My third issue may be related to the second. Whenever I hit any decent size bump or hole in the road, my suspension squeaks rather loud. Do you think this issue is related to the struts/shocks.. or something else?

In advance, I appriciate the help and looking forward to being a part of these forums.

Thanks,
Zak

Body Damage is Cool
Rock auto is great, and that is a good price for shocks and struts. The squeek could be related to the worn struts, the only way to know for sure is if it's gone after you put new ones on. As for your power window, first remove your switch, clean all the contacts see if that helps. If it is still not working check the local wrecking yards for a good used motor and/or switch. or try this web site (http://www.partshotlines.com/)

Hope this helps, Dennis

Cool. How exactly do I "remove the switch and clean the contacts?" I'd definantly like to try that first instead of buying a new regulator/motor.
