IFS Third Member - 5.29 Genuine Gears - EZ Locker - $700 - Opinions? - 11/05/07 06:21 PM

A gentlemen on Craiglist in my town has a complete IFS third listed for $700 and loaded with 5.29 Genuine Gears with a Detroit EZ Locker.

Curious if there are opinions out there on these brand of gears and the EZ Locker in the front on an IFS rig. I was leaning more towards Yukon gears with a TrueTrac, but, the price might be right.

Also, what to look for when I pop the cover, if I get that far.

Thanks

Mike

Genuine gears are not so good especially in the smaller 7.5 diff. I have a broken set out in the shop on the bench with a tooth missing off the ring gear. They do have a lifetime warranty but only to the original purchaser and only with a reciept. If you where setting up your own gears they would probably be ok in the front because of the limited use and you would be able to re-install them when you break them free of charge. But under those conditions thats pretty steep.

edit...If it was $400 then I would consider it but $700 is steep. You could probably have everything all set up brand new for that much. You figure $250 for gears and bearings + $250 for a lock-right. Set up should be fairly reasonable. If you where local I would do it.

$700 is a high for a used set. I paid $250 for the exact same thing about 18 months ago, and I have seen ARB IFS set-ups for the $7-800 price on other boards in the past. I wouldn't pay more than $350 for it, about half of what you would pay for a new gears/locker and w/bench labor. Check other craigslist sites in the area, as well as Marlin and Pirate, someone is usually always getting rid of an IFS 3rd with 5.29's.

Looking at his post it looks like the parts are from an SAS. I would offer him $600 for the diff, the rotors and hubs, the steering linkage components, cv's and driveshaft, the parts aren't worth anymore than that.

Snowtoy,

Thanks for the great response. Good advise. I am going to go look the parts over, see what the gears look like, go from there.

Yup, he did an SAS and has all of the leftover bits from the swap. Time to sharpen my pencil and figure out what I woudl want to pay, if anything.

Any opinion on the EZ Locker? I have no experience with that type.

Thanks again,

Mike

A true-trac came with my used gears, I think the EZ-locker works the same way. If it does it really doesn't put that much stress on the cv's, I haven't had any breakage the few times I have ran it this summer. It should help out on the trail, but don't expect it to be like an ARB, sometimes you have to apply the break pedal to get it to engage.

Having extra cv's is nice if you do end up breaking one with the ez-locker, complete tie-rods should be in your spare parts bag along w/an extra hub. I am not sure how well the slotted rotors actually work, when you slot/x-drill oem sized rotors you are actually removing breaking contact surface.
