More Questions on a 2wd/4wd Frame Difference- URGENT! - 03/16/09 07:33 PM

I'm going to look at a '85 2wd xtra cab truck as a possible donor for a 4wd project. My urgent question is about a tow bar that I made to tow 4wd trucks and 4runners ('84 - '88). I made some tabs that bolt to the front of the frame on the bottom of each frame rail where factory attaches the "recovery" hook. I bolt these tabs onto the truck to be towed using factory mounting points. Then I attach my tow bar to these tabs. I've only used this on 4wd rigs. Do 2wd trucks have the same "recovery hook" mounting points on the frame? -- Matt

I think it's probably too different. My tow bar is not adjustable (something I should fix). I'll probably rent a tow dolly. -- Matts

The 2wd's have 2 tow tabs instead of one hook and one tab. I would think they would be the same bolt pattern, since it would keep productin costs down, but I am not 100% positive.

I think they are different, although if I got off my arse, I could look at my own.
The front bumper mounts are completely different on the frame side of a 2wd, but the actual factory bumper is the same piece (except for the bumper end caps).
I'll see if I can locate the mount points you're referring to on my truck.

EDIT - take a look at the pic in your other thread, if it helps.

Well, this picture may not be worth a thousand words, but it should give you your answer.

As stated the 2wds have 2 loops instead of a loop and hook but the mounting holes are the same. I switched to an '86 2wd frame and swaped the hook over.

When I went to look at the 2wd truck I checked those tabs and they seemed to spaced about a 1/2" farther apart (25" vs 24-5/8") rail to rail, but it looks like the bolt spacings for mounting are the same. I think my tow bar would work with this. Unfortunately the truck I looked at was totally misrepresented. It was said to have a good cab and frame but it turned out to have big rust holes on the rockers and a big hole in the frame next to the gas tank.

Thanks to all who tried to help out. -- Matt
