Cool! Some I think may not have unRAR ability. I'll get them pulled and rezipped, and post on mine as well.

Nice find...

Re: EURO, Japan & USA CAPS - 09/07/08 04:14 AM

I guess EUR and Japanese CAPS are for those markets. How does USA CAPS differ from standard CAPS? Does it include later models? What is GEN CAPS?

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 09/07/08 04:15 AM

Awesome! Edited your post, since the software doesn't like a certain version of the word "Japan".

Folks, in case you've never heard of it, CAPS is the Mitsubishi Computerized Automatic Part Searching System, and is the same program the dealer will use when looking up your vehicle. It has helped me hugely in the last two years, when I'm trying to cross-ref JDM and USDM part numbers. Also handy for those pioneers who find world market parts that we didn't get here. Or just in case you wanna find a part number before you go to your local parts store.

When you drill down into the menus, you get an exploded diagram of the parts you're looking at, and that is helpful sometimes, too.

Thanks Toastmeister!

Now I understand what you meant by RAR. Did the same thing not realizing I needed the RAR program to open the caps.

That is what the caps are and the other is the program that is needed to look at the caps, I think, but am not completly sure, but a good guess, possibly.

That is great, looks like the answer was right in front of me and I skimmed over it. Sorry. So where is the software needed to use this resource?

So does this mean if I use the overseas version, I can get part numbers for cool stuff we don't have in the US like chrome mirrors, hydralic ride height control, power folding mirrors, hood ornaments, etc???

Thanks. I actually saw that part; the part I can't find is the link for the RAR software on that web site

Lordtrunks actually found these by accident, and GEN is general i don't know the country but it is a bigger file than the USA version. Go to mitsubishi parts to order your stuff.

I downloaded the usa caps but I couldn't figure out how to get it to run.
Can anyone run through the procedure for us?

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 09/10/08 02:15 AM

You need to uncompress it, then run the CAPS.exe file.

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 09/13/08 02:12 PM

LOL... I had them rezipped fine. I was having trouble getting into the server where my site sits though. I got that all straightened out and they finished loading last night. New links on on my webpage.

I have not tried downloaded the ZIPs to test. They should be good though. If anyone has any trouble, let me know.

OK, I need help. I downloaded the files from the very post of this thread, but don't have the software to open them. Where is the link to the software?
Posted By: MontyMcV

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 09/13/08 08:09 PM

Try WinRAR will extract them. Don't know if there is a free version like with WinZIP. Or download the ones from my site. I extracted the RARs and then ZIPped them back up.

I am not just old but think I am going blind. I looked on your site but cannot find them
Posted By: MontyMcV

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 09/14/08 02:36 AM

About 2/3s down there is a section heading that reads "CAPS parts..." and then the four links under it.

They are ZIP files that Windows can open, but it will be slow. You are better off with WinZIP or a similar unzip utility.

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 09/14/08 09:39 AM

Sorry if this seems dumb, but maybe I am retarded. I have downloaded the zipped version from your site, but don't exactly know how to use it. Can anyone give a general overview on how I would use this to look up parts and diagrams? I have 3 folders: CAPS, PASEN, and WINCAPS. Inside the WINCAPS folder, I tried clicking on 'INSTEXP' thinking that was to install the new software. When I do that, it says it cannot open a certain file and cannot execute a certain file. So then I tried clicking on 'CAPSMAIN' which opens the program, but I can't get it to do anything. I can also click on 'CAPS' and it opens what looks like the same program, but again, I can't get it to do anything. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Sorry if these seems like a no-brainer to anyone.

OK, so whats the part number for the 5.29's for the big 3.5 diffs??
Posted By: Scottie2113

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 09/14/08 04:43 PM

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but the best ratio you can get in a 3.5L gen II diff is 4.90 not 5.29 The 5.29 are gears that can be put in the gen I diffs.

I have the original version and have no problem.

What are the AE and BE in the euro version?

The rumor is you can get Pt numbers for 5.29's for the 3.5 diffs through the euro caps.

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 09/14/08 11:46 PM

This is what I have found, after unzipping all of them:

USA: Run from \Wincaps\Caps.exe
GEN: Run from \Wincaps\Caps.exe
JPN: Run from \Caps.exe
EUR: Run from \AE\Wincaps\Caps.exe
(I could not get the same from \BE to run. Haven't tried to re-download original RAR.)

I can get the programs to start. The problem is they do not offer any vehicles.

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 09/15/08 02:14 AM

Their made to key in off of VIN. With the US one on the past, I have been able to tab past the VIN box and drill into the parts. If you have never used CAPS before, I suggest entering your own VIN into the US one and getting a feel for it. It is a bit of a clunky app.

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 09/15/08 02:33 AM

I have no problem with the US one and I do not use my vin.

I put in my model.

I am not doubting you, but if you get these parts and they work, can you please let me know as I would want to upgrade mine as well. I put in 4.90s thinking they were the best I could get for my 3.5L gen II.

Bill, I D/L them from your site and unzipped them. I looked thru all the folders and don't see an EXE file in them. Am I missing something? Do I use the EXE file from the current version of CAPS that I have to open it?

OK I can't get this damned thing to work either. I dl'ed it at work (T1 connection), unzipped it and get all 3 folders. I go in WINCAPS/CAPS.exe, it starts the app but wont do anything after this.

I've uninstalled twice and reinstalled same useless garbage.

Is this ZIP file corrupt? Any other downlaod links available???

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 02/11/09 05:01 AM

The 3SI link is the same as in the OuterLimits one. I have a copy as well via my site, but is isn't clear which one to use. I'll work on cleaning that up.

As for the other versions, it seems that there is a short circuit in where the WINCAPS is installed, versus where the app wants to find its files. For example, if you install the good 3SI, then change the directory name to WINCAPSx, the app will launch, but then not really work once you try to do some lookups. The behavior is similar to how the other version behave for me, even though they are installed into WINCAPS.

I took a quick look for things like .ini files, but that lead me nowhere. That was a while ago though. I need to try again with more beers and time to kill...

I haven't see where everyone has gotten these versions of CAPS to work. Has everyone gotten their version to run ok?

If not, here's a write-up I found on how to get caps up and running on your system which I found on stealth316's site (http://www.stealth316.com/2-wincaps.htm). Has anyone tried this method to get CAPS working & more importantly, does it work?

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 03/11/09 04:20 AM

Looks as though a few files may be missing? CD-WW.ICO for one when i try to run the set-up file.

Basically I keep getting a CD not loaded error.

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 03/11/09 04:43 AM

Figured it out..

1. Create a folder on C:(or any other drive root) called WINCAPS so it should look something like this C:\WINCAPS

2. Copy the contents of the unzipped folder "caps_usa" to C:\WINCAPS (in my case I am using the usa version.

3. Go to C:\WINCAPS\WINCAPS and run the "CAPS.EXE" file.

4. At the top left corner of the window pick "File(F)" and "Setup(S)"

5. Set the areas in red in the pic below to be the same.
[Linked Image]

6. Now give it a try.

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 03/11/09 12:29 PM

The thing I would like to learn is how to toggle, or switch between data sets. I expect there is a way to set Wincaps up so you can have two or three data sets and choose one for a session.
If this may not be feasible then to have two separate versions that could both be open so I can the other data sets.
Posted By: off-roader

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 03/11/09 04:20 PM

I haven't tried it but perhaps you could simply install a Europe instance of wincaps under c:/WincapsEur and the Japan wincaps under c:/WincapsJap, etc. Then change the configuration/setup screen for each instance to look for the data set in the corresponding directory.
Posted By: OldColt

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 03/11/09 05:00 PM

That sounds like the way. I have put each dataset in a separate folder in the wincaps directory. I guess a manual entry in setup to link each but am curious if there is a way to toggle directories such as with the F keys.
I seem to be getting weaker in my DOS setups.
Posted By: OldColt

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 03/11/09 05:06 PM

Ahh, I think I might have it, the F8 key is CD switch.

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 03/11/09 05:17 PM

Outstanding Red Team! I will try all this as well. Assuming I can repeat across them, I'll look to add a ReadMe to the ZIPs I have posted up. May take me a few to get to it...
Posted By: OldColt

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 03/11/09 05:38 PM

I almost have it,
i copy and pasted the path to each file, Caps did not seem to want the final directory included as it's original path shows.

When I toggle I do get a different list of cars but I do get an error message about loading the CD.
So I am close but not there yet.

Re: EURO, ***** & USA CAPS - 03/12/09 06:58 PM

Oh boy I did it now, Yesterday I had caps switching between data sets but not fully opening the other sets. It gave me the list of car lines but I could not get any further.
Well today, I just opened Wincaps and it opened in Japenese. Humm, so I opened the setup, easy since it is the bottom of the file column. Fine but it gives me a different selection and all in ???????. It will not convert languages.
I guess I will be a bit delayed in getting todays parts order called in.
