Thinking about swapping in a 1995 3.5L SOHC into my Gen I - 05/16/15 02:05 AM

Guys,
Does anyone know off hand of any other forum topics or members who have discussed this on the wire?

This is as far as I got with the same question. You would have to upgrade to all the 3.5 controls.

The 4x4wire archives have some info on this topic:

Use the keywords 3.5l soho swap in the search box at the top of the page for additional info on the topic....

Oh men and my brother just told me of a guy selling a DOHC with tranny and all for $600 but in PR. That is a nice project.

I would jump on something like that only if I had more garage space.

I thInk I made a mistake in the topic of the thread. I'm pretty sure the 1995 3.5L engine only came as a DOHC. I think it switched to SOHC in 1997.

You can edit that. Well, what vehicle are you contemplating doing that with? 6 cylinder? Relatively easy. Think about it, one object at a time. Less daunting that way. And I'm taking for granted that you have the donor vehicle handle, will certainly make the swap easier.
1. Engine Mounting. If yours is a V-6 it should bolt in. The engine mounts and the trans should bolt right up. Done
2. Exhaust. Probly won't match right off the bat. A simple combo of the two should get you to a muffler shop til you can do it right. A couple of feet off the 3.5 exhaust from the collector, cut a couple feet off your 3.0 exhaust, some flex pipe from any part store. Done.
3. Fuel. Here is where it gets interesting. Will the stock 3.0 work? Not researched that enough. Flow RAtes, Pressure, etc. If not, then figure out way to put a 3.5 one where the 3.0 one is. Then figure out how you will mate the 3.5 fuel to the 3.0 body fuel lines. Done.
4. Electrics. This is what kills it for most. Ususally over thought out though. ECU remove 3.0, put in 3.5. Wiring Harness. Seperate and remove 3.0 wiring harness. Label everything. Gauges wiring, battery hots, ignition hots, grounds. If you can have both side by side outside the engine compartment, this would go much easier. Have the 3.5 with it's harness still on, remove the 3.0 with it's harness complete. Then compare connections, figure out which are body connections and which are ECU connections. You can figure all that out while it is still outside the vehicle.
5. Accesories - air intake, power steering, AC. For starters, with an empty engine compartment, You should be able to mount that stuff in the original placement on the donor vehicle. Maybe have to drill some holes, etc. Done.

Not minimizing the swap as just an engine change, but it is much easier to contemplate. Leta ll that roll around a bit. One step at a time. And I'm sure others will come in and want to shoot this down. Instead, please feel free to add to it. If this Hyundai 3.5 deal works, this can open up an engine swap choice for the older models. Now if you have a 4 cyl, an addendum to the motor mounts is cutting off the 4 cyl mounts and moving them to allow the proper placement. And down the road; extra weights on torsion bars, weaker 4cyl axles.

Pa_Jero did this already. Contact him!

It's a beast.

User SRTNATE had a build thread that never got finished. It has a lot of good info, I just don't know if he ever finished that project.

X2 JBFP, we put 3.5 DOHC in PA_JERO's 4cyl gen 1 and that thing is awesome! So glad we did that. It'll go easier in a truck originally equipped with a V6.

TOASTY,
Was it just the engine? Or the entire powertrain?

Just the engine, we swapped a gen 1 v6 bellhousing onto the original 4cyl transmission. Later PA_JERO swapped in a complete v6 lockup gen 1 trans and more recently we swapped in the Dana 44, Box4Rocks and Dana 20 transfercases.

Okay TOASTY,
With my 1989 3.0L automatic transmission stock, would it make sense to you then if I just swapped the engine and ECU harness along with some of the accessories?

I'm not TOASTY, but I'll chime in here with a loud YES.

Okay guys,
This is becoming more real for me now. Just working through some of the stats on these engines, this is what I have found so far.

6G72 (3.0L SOHC - 4x4Wire)
89-91 6G72 3.0 SOHC V6 12 MPI 143@5000 168@2500

6G74 (3.5L DOHC - 4x4Wire)
94-96 6G74 3.5 DOHC V6 24 MPI 215@5500 228@3000

With the torque difference, should I expect transmission problems? Perhaps having a tranny shop overhaul it may be a good call.

You know, I've been giving this a lot of thought lately. What would it look like for my power to weight ratio?

Let's run those numbers, shall we?

My current power to weight ratio: 24.4
My target power to weight ratio: 16.2

Your V6 trans will be fine especially if it'a a lockup, put a new front seal in and run it.
