Any of you guys ever throw Solid Axles under these things and make them real 4x4s?

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 07/12/09 07:22 PM

We have a few with solids. Dave Scott has d44s with 38s I believe. KIAFREEKROB has a 2 door with toyota axles. check them out in the arcives.

I kind of missed the real 4x4 coment , I have shown up a few so-called real 4x4s evan with my IFS. I have done 4 rated trails in Moab with no bypasses and ran S&R with it for 8 rears. I concider my Kia a real 4x4. I have had Jeeps, F150s, a ZR2 blazer and Highboy Ford and the Kia can hang with any of them.

Any way, Happy wheelin in what ever you wheel, Dennis

Yeah, I was just teasin' you guys with that, I've seen a few IFS Kias do quite well on the trails! I tried to find those other rigs you were talking about in the archives but I didn't see them. I really would like to see how they were built though.

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 07/12/09 11:03 PM

I didn't take you to serious, when you build and wheel a Kia you have to have a sense of humor. I went back looking for them and if you type in SAS and go back a bit you will find them. Dave showed most of his build up and KIAFREEKROB looks like a show rig but he's not afriad to wheel it.

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 11/12/09 11:53 AM

Kiacrawler & 357transam,
Did you have too lose the front bumper to run those wheels,
or is it cause of the bigger tires?
I'm getting 15x8 wheels with 2.5" backspace in the mail. do you think I'll be able to turn them on 235/75/15's or if I upgrade to 30 X 9.5 you think they'll still turn in the wheel well? I know I'll have to do trimming. Whatcha think?
Posted By: 357transam

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 11/12/09 03:51 PM

I personally just ditched the front bumper because i didnt feel like trimming it to fit the tires. Planning on doing a metal bumper in the future, so for now, no bumper. I still had to do some trimming on the rear portion of the front fenders, but wasnt much, at the most about 1/2 to 1/4 of an inch. I would think you should be able to fit the 235s without a whole lot of trimming, but im not sure.
Posted By: jays2001

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 11/13/09 02:38 AM

i didnt have to trim with 235 75 15 but with 31s had to trim some off bumper and beat the seam on fire wall flat

Look in the main list Rokia 4 sale, there is a link to the first shakedown run & writeup.

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 11/16/09 05:59 PM

I dont remember my backspacing... I think it was somewhere around 4" or 4.5", and 31x10.5 tires. At full stuff and turning I'd rub my bumper and the rear of the front fender. So I took Dave's advice and took a hammer to the body seam, and cut the front fender. keep in mind I didn't run a body lift. I think if you install a 2 or 3" body lift you wont have the issues with your front tires rubbing. But I've met a few kia owners that were running 30x9.5's with no rubbing at all. I took the bumper off for a better approach angle, here in NV there are lots of rocks and it just made things easier.

Dennis- i'm driving a really old really beat up Chevy 4x4. but if i had the money, ROKIA would be mine!!! course I'd need to figure something out with highway driving. Full hydro steering on ROKIA I don't think I'd take it above 45mph.

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 11/18/09 04:50 AM

The steering can be fixed by 2 things, a steering wheel bigger than 9" will help alot & a simple gear reduction with bycicle sprockets. as is there is only 1 1/2 turns side to side, the reduction could easily put it at 3 turns & I would be willing to do that for any potential new owner.

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 12/12/09 06:19 AM

I really like the Wrap that was added to the Sporty above. I'm not really into the Camo look, but It'll help hide trail dings and scratches. Great idea.
The bumper on the front looks like it might hinder aproach angles, being so big and all. Same with the rear trailor hitch carrier rack. I'm stickin to the roof rack basket for carrying my extra load.

Really like the KC light bar and lights though.
Guess I'm just jealous. Oh well....

This Sporty might not have boobs, but she's got a fat bumper.

Believe it was custom 1 offs by a friend of owner. As far as the rear rack, you can buy one from HARBORFREIGHT
Rear Carrier and Dual Reciever.

With the 2 in combination, it gives you more clearance.

Haha, no, that's the shop where I work. I'm a tech at a Volvo dealership. I got the wheels from Summit, and the tires are a used set I scored from craigslist.
Posted By: Sportege_Panicmech

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 01/18/10 01:32 AM

Volvo tech eh? Just did a timing belt and water pump on an S70 Thursday I think it was.. not as bad as I thought it would be.. funny thing. We called the dealer to buy bolts for the crank pulley cause Mitchell1 says they are one time use (torque to yeild). Using them again and they supposedly break. Well we call and they shrug and said the techs have never asked for those parts before and have never had a comeback for them breaking neither.. lol. So we just used the old bolts as well. other than that, it was a breeze.

The lead master tech next stall over was working on a newer audi w/ 2.7l v6 in search of a coolant leak.. he had to remove the front end literally. everything from the radiator forward comes off with the bumper. He had the exhaust, tranny, and other here and there's off also. and just the week before, the customer had the tranny out for something else. within the last year they have spend $6000 on this car!! heck with that, dude I payed $6500 for my kia and spent only like $800 in mechanical minus tires. I think audi/vw's are cool as hell to drive, but I'd never own one Needless to say, the tech spent a few days on that car and lost money on it (flat rate) big time.

I don't care what the mechanics say, if it's my car I replace the head bolts!

I have had a bad experience not replacing them. Helped my brother-in-law do the head gasket on his little Ford Escort and on the very last head bolt, on the very last step of torqueing, PING! Head bolt broke off, level with the head gasket surface. That bolt was a [censored] to remove. Never again! It's worth the 20 bux or so for my time.

No need to replace the bolts for the crank pulley. Never worked on Audi's, but you should see the dough these people spend on their Volvo's. A guy came in a couple weeks ago with a car he had recently bought at some used car lot. It was in pretty bad shape. He must have gotten a really good deal because he bought $4500 worth of work on a 99 C70, that probably isn't even worth that much. People either love em or hate em!

Yeah you should always replace head bolts.

It's been so weird this week. We've had an audi, another audi, a jetta, and that volvo C70... oo and another volvo C60 just the other day too. So weird.. we're just a repair shop, not German specific. what was really weird was seeing the shop full of German cars and "Du-Hash" plays on the radio.. That was a bit weird. Love that song btw !

I love my 1997 Volvo 850R. 240HP 5-cylinder... gotta love it. Of course, the trick is to do most of the work yourself and gets the parts from FCP Groton. Saves alot of money that way. Keep them running and those Volvo's will last forever. Hardly ever see a rusty one, either!
Posted By: ScottC

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 01/25/10 05:39 AM

Volvo's are made in Sweden, close enough though. Our shop labor rate is $130 an hour. 850's are great cars, made before ford got their hands into everything. I'd love to get a 96 or 97 850R wagon. They do have excellent rust protection, especially compared to asian cars, but I have to break out the torches now and then to get certain things loose. Never see rusted body panels though. My other car is an 02 S80. The Kia actually belongs to my wife, we just had our first baby, so now she drives the volvo and I rock the kia. That's why it's lifted now, i couldn't stand driving that thing around the way it was!

My Sporty only has the 3" UPYOURKIA lift.
Boombie is my dogs name. He is not liking the cold Alaskan weather. Picked Boombie up in northern Italy. The lil bastard only understands the German language for some reason. Or he's mentally disabled from all the abuse? He just loves to go wheeling. This lil guy humps everything that moves. Boombie is hung like a hitch and will mount anything with a 2" reciever; like some of us here on the site.

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 02/07/10 02:01 AM

Tks, I made it by myself on the repair shop, just cut fenders a litle bit and bumper (stock one)...
next step is metal bumpers front and rear.

My spare tire does not fit inside my car anymore (32's) so tire carrier is a must.

I had the tint done at Rocky Mountain Window Tint in Livermore a couple years ago when they had a winter deal for about 180 out the door and lifetime warranty on the tint. They did a very good job and I have had no problems with the work they did, I would definitely recommend them.

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 02/08/10 08:45 PM

Mattrod your 96 Sportage looks just like mine did, same color and everything. Well before I lifted it anyway.

I miss my 96, I had a really nice sound system in there

Had about 10 pounds of deadening in each door, 6.5" mid drivers in the door, tweets up top by the side view mirror mount, active amped with 3 amps, Alpine deck, lots of deadening in the rear door so it wouldn't stay up anymore on the hydraulic lifts

For my sub I had options, I usually drove around with a 10" sub but I also had a 15" sub in a box I built for when I wanted to really feel it

A drunk driver smashed it up so I had to get my current model which is a 2002. Nice vehicle and has a better engine and a much better lift than my 96 had smile But no good stereo

I know this doesn't help much now but you should have removed the entire stereo system before the Insurance Carrier took it away.
They don't add much for aftermarket equipment and generally only pay pennies on the dollar for what you invested.
I usually tell people to take everything out and stuff a stock deck in the hole. Typically they don't catch it nor care.

Super Super easy---The biggest cost was that Auto Trans....

The rest was EASY!!

I got the warn manual locking unit (I had no choice in my case)...And there be no cluster panel light indicating 4x4..(who cares)!!

And I have the custom plate guard underneath from Platergar

BTW: the front extra weight actually aids the CV axles from banging/rubbing.

I still plan on getting the front second shock conversion like next month (Just spoke with Dave ...and he said that it was super EASY)!!

I like your rig too. How come every body has these mean looking stompers and mine is still a cute-ute. I need to start some bumper trimmin, tire buying, metal fabricating this summer. I'm tired of my stock look. Damn my wife's conservative ways. I need to grow some balls, and start the transformation to Road Warrior status too! Lets get a drivers side snorkle picture of that Sporty Jaboo, if you get the chance that is...

Mini,
That is a cool lil 2dr Sporty. I think that you should lift that short wheelbase rig and start looking accross at other trucks, instead of up at them. I'm conservative with the 3" lift from UPYOURKIA. But the lift is nice and gets me a birds eye view of the traffic. My wife is a big girl and she has to hop up into it now. The added clearance allows me to hop up and over 1' meridians at will. Thank the maker...

Jaboo,
I just love technical pics of peoples fabricated modifications. Wanted a closer look at your design. Like how you mounted the snorkle to the drivers side pillar, what diameter piping that you choose and where the hole for pipe inlet into the fender was cut. Pics, Pics, Pics... Please

Everyone,
You guys with modified (anything) to your Sportages should realize that you are the Pioneers of this off Road vehicle.
Your pictures on the net are a gold mine find for the new Sporty owners and potential builders of this rig. There is no aftermarket support for our rigs. So you guys with your hand crafted modifications are all that we have to inspire us new owners to join and be proud of our vehicles.
I would never have found this site if it weren't for a few pics that I discovered on Google Pictures web site. Thank you for your inspiration.

Did you notice any power loss after installing the snorkel? Just wondering because 2" seems small, with that length I would have expected restriction

Man ..... I wanted to make a joke here but I can't

I was wondering the same, seems like a very long way to pull the air from.

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 02/26/10 09:46 PM

Also what's the hood scoop for? Is that to cool down the engine compartment? It seems contradictory to have a hood scoop and a snorkel, if the water is high enough to need the snorkel then the hood scoop can let water in and make it so there's no "air bubble" in the engine compartment, making the engine get more submerged.

Sportage with no snorkel or hood scoop can go into water up to the top of the hood, but with the scoop the water would spill right in. Better make sure you caulked the spark plug cover so water doesn't go in there.

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 06/09/10 12:19 AM

That would have been awesome, if i had the money for the kit. I have between twenty, and thirty dollars in my snorkle. And it's still water tight. There's alot of things i would have liked to have put on that with some extra money would've made it look better, but i'm just showin the budget look. Your's looks really good though.

This is what you see in my pictures.

1st Picture: ProComp 15x8 Wheels, 3" UPYOURKIA, Roof Rack.
2nd Picture: Front Fender trimmed, 2.5" Backspaced Wheels.
3rd Picture: Sorry for Low Light, Wide Stance.
4th Picture: Tire Shock Clearance, Class III Hitch, 7 Prong Trailer Electric, Center of Wheel LED Backup Light.

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 08/03/11 12:12 PM

I like the center of spare backup light.

I've been considering doing the same thing for some time now, but with a brake light instead. On the 2-door, the spare tire is actually mounted on the tailgate, which opens to the side. There is a big plastic riser for the third brakelight so that it sits over top of the spare. I had to put spacers under the riser to make it clear the bigger spare, and it would be nice to eliminate it and regain a little more view out the back.

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 08/03/11 12:51 PM

The third brake light centered in the bore of the spare wheel is a test run. I used a DOT approved 4" round tractor light wedged between the wheel and the spare mounting bracket. I wired the light to a used 7 prong trailer hitch. Light only works when I plug it into the hitch.

I wanted to go the other route and have spot lights for back up lights in the 4" square reflector housing. But after extensive use of the Sporty in the snow. I opted against that. without mud flaps; the reflector area gets covered in snow. I'm still debating on how that area will turn out.

I use 5 dollar resistors in all my tail lights so they blink before I stop. Warning those behind to slow down on the Ice before they slide into me in the winter.

I really want better backup lighting though. But haven't decided yet.

Lights on the roof rack would seem like an easy option, but when it's snowing hard, all you see is snow fall. So I wanted to mount the backuplight lower to illuminate the trail and not the falling snow.

Tape on intake looks bad (just bein honest no offense), but it's purpose is worth it as long as it holds out the water. I like how you used your trunk access and took off the hatch to use it for more room. We should scheme up a swivel hinge for the O.E. panel so you can close it and reopen it. wouldn't be hard at all =)

Sweet looking ride. Thanks for the Pics.

I Second that notion on the floor.
Fix the Pics please. Hard to view in this manner.

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 08/06/11 02:55 PM

I don't know why the pics look different for some. When I view them, they are normal. I thought about hinging the floor, but with the way the carpet is and the recess in the floor, it opens and closes the same as it would if it had hinges. The old cover showed how weak it was when I put a keg of beer in there, so I made one out of plywood. Way better. The floor spot holds a lot of stuff. I removed the factory jack since I have a hi-lift and steel bumpers. It hold an air compressor, jumper cables, shackles, tire plug kit, lug wrench, ratcheting straps, bungee cords, and the base for the hi-lift and still has room. The duct tape on the intake does look bad, but was one of those temporary fixes that worked too well, so I haven't given it much thought. I can say, I know for sure the snorkel works!

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 08/09/11 01:10 AM

Put on some Firestone Destination M/T 31x10.5. Broke the front left hub, dented the rear right door on tree, and broke the rear roof rack bar. Still made it through a lot of stuff in rear drive only. Wish I had limited slip or something in both front and rear.

DUDE!! Lovin that sportage Hambodian! Lights and rack on top with the lift and wheels does it well. And rep'n Tacoma, nice! I'm over in Idaho. Seeing more and more sportages around in the NW on here. Thinking next summer maybe we'll have enough for a decent trail meet. Although, I've never done one. And I've been mostly a pavement pounder, would love to get some mild trailin under my belt. I typically go for the deep snow when we get it. Easier to clean up than mud. and doesn't fill the chassis/ wire harnesses like mud does. Maybe a winter meet haha!

Just finished the rear shock relocation and homemade coil retainers. I'm running 31x10.50x15 kenda klever mudder's at 15psi out back and 20psi up front. The shock relocation easily doubled my flex. What do you fellas think?

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 06/17/16 05:49 PM

I did not take pictures while building it since it was 101 degrees outside and documenting the 5 different design failures before i came up with this one was the least of my worries. Its by far the most simple way i could figure so that's the one I stuck with so far. The bottom posts I added to the axle was a quick crude way to keep the bottom of the spring where it needed to be. I'll be changing that to a bumpstop\spring locator today if I get some more arc rods. I'm even thinking about flipping the whole setup over so the spring retainer is on the axle and the bumpstop is on top. Should make for a smoother transition back to level. I will take pictures this time around and post them. Here are some pictures of the way it is now.

Re: Post Pictures Of Your Kia - 06/17/16 06:21 PM

The retaining plate was made from a chunk of scrap flat stock that was 4" wide and 1\8th inch thick. I cut it to about 6.5" long and cut the corners off. From there I used a large vice and a bfh and formed a curved lip in the long ends of the plate forming the spring keeper edges then ground to half the thickness of the coil spring and drilled a hole in the center for the mounting bolt. Next step is to use a sawzall or cutoff wheel and remove most of the upper spring plates center locater bump. I then found some washers that were 1\4 inch thick and welded a nut to on side then drilled a relief hole in the frame for the bolt to go into when tightened. Next step is insert the bolt into the nut washer combo and then weld in place over the hole I cut. From there its up to you how to locate the bottom. Like I said before I'm considering flipping it upside down for better performance and a cleaner look.
