I as well would like to know the current sources for obtainment of rear axle LSD. I have searched for quite a while and came up with zero!

Stock for sure. Any one know?

If so then please let All of Us Know!

Thanks,
Mikey

you might try the national locator for junkyards the website is car-part.com ..... i havent looked for that in particular but you can find just about anything on there and most major wrecking yards are on there and a lot of small ones too...check it out

Re: some of us want a LSD for rear - 09/16/09 12:07 AM

REMEMBER: If your buying one from a salvage yard, there are 26 and 28 spline units. Correct me if I am wrong, I believe 95-97 have 26 spline axles in the rear, and 98-02 has 28 spline axles.
Ring gears are different size from front to back so you can't swap.
Good Luck

Re: some of us want a LSD for rear - 09/18/09 12:28 PM

Have fun with that website. I was looking through it for a LSD rear end a couple months back near the Akron, Ohio area. Most of the ones that are listed as locker also say "ck" or "check locker" or something similar. I didn't find a single one that was actually a locker. I even drove a couple hours to look at one because I was told it was, but it turned out not to be.

If you find one you think might be LSD, ask the yard to either run the VIN by Kia to have them verify it or ask for the VIN and call Kia yourself.

Most Miata's fit the front, Miata's with Torson LSD and turbo RX7's fit the rear. Look for early 90s and do some research and check ring gear size and spline count before you buy. Go back in the arcives a ways, this has been gone through a few times but I find new thing ever time I research more.

What do I have? - 09/19/09 10:55 AM

I don't know if I have a LSD or not in my 2002 Sporty.
I know only one tire spins in snow, mud and up hills.
How do I go about finding out if I have one in the rear?
If I don't have one. There is a possibility that I can order one for an older Miata or RX7 to put in mine?
Excuse my ignorance please.

raise the rear wheels put in neut. and spin the rear right wheel forward both should move forward, if not it's not a lsd,

Re: some of us want a LSD for rear - 09/20/09 06:57 AM

Dennis what is the ring gear size on a 2001 sporty, won't the ring gear off our rear ends bolt up to the rx7 lsd ? do you know off hand the dia of the side bearing that mounts up to the carrier assy. ?
Posted By: bombardj1

Re: some of us want a LSD for rear - 09/20/09 07:19 AM

Dennis do you know the dia. of the rear end of the diff. both sides, I see that RX7 have a open barrled bearings and the kia's are closed, the RX7's bearing will have to be removed. you know after looking at drawings of the sportage is that little gear-set bolted to the LSD and being turned by a pinion gear. ok guys please don't hound me about what I am thinking, but I do need the measurements , thanks again Dennis

Re: some of us want a LSD for rear - 09/20/09 01:29 PM

I was reading around about LSD's. I saw some posts about people using Sportage LSD's in a Honda S2000.

There are lots of LSD's out there for the S2000.

Anyone know enough to tell whether the S2000 LSD would fit in the Sportage?

There are some S2000 LSD's on Ebay, some for as cheap as $350. Unfortunately they are helical LSD's so, not as good as clutch type LSD for offroading right?

There are others but they are like $800 or something.

Re: some of us want a LSD for rear - 09/25/09 06:07 AM

It wouldn't surprise me, most Honda's are FWD so they had to source a dif somewhere for a RWD. Again, Research before you buy anything. Also you want to find either a clutch type or a Torsen for off road. The Ranger FX4 level IIs use a Torsen and they seem to work great.

The S2000 will fit the front. Guys buy the Sportage front ring and pinion for the lowest gears available for the S2000.

Re: some of us want a LSD for rear - 11/07/09 01:35 AM

Most of those stupid web sites that say they sell the Eaton posi for the Sportage don't actually stock the item, when you order it they order it from Eaton.

... and then your order gets back-ordered, and eventually Eaton tells them "hey we don't make that posi any more sorry" and your order gets cancelled.

I know from trying to buy a posi from a few different sites. If they don't have it IN STOCK you probably aren't getting it.

Re: some of us want a LSD for rear - 11/07/09 09:20 AM

Nukeiridium,

Came to pretty much the same conclusion after contacting Eaton. Here's a copy of the message: 24 Oct 2009

Me -
I would like to know if your company makes a drop in locking differential that will fit the 1998 - 07 KIA Sportage 10 Bolt, 28-Spline 4.44 rear end. other than the Eaton Posi: 19536-20.
I am part of a select few 4x4 off road enthusiasts that have selected the Kia Sportage as our vehicle of choice. We are very intrested in upgrading our rear differentials for this use. And your assistance on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Tom Sape, Eaton Automotive Group,
(248) 226-6925
My apologies as I was told that our aftermarket team got back with you. Eaton does not offer differentials for this vehicle.

Because some people have been warned before, and also to stop others joining in. Finding 26 entries in one day, with very little real point to them (not even on track of the original post) gets a bit annoying.

This is the Tech forum, this is a tech thread. We have an Off topic section on 4X4Wire and we have PM for more personal communication if that's what you want to post about.

Hmm, nice find. Obviously, the ring and pinoin can be swapped between all those vehicles listed. my question is this: can the carriers be swapped between vehicles? obviously the ring would bolt up to the carrier, so the only fitment issue would be if the carriers were not the same width between the vehicles. In other words, are the overall length of the carriers the same from carrier bearing to carrier bearing?

Hmm, nice find. Obviously, the ring and pinoin can be swapped between all those vehicles listed. my question is this: can the carriers be swapped between vehicles? obviously the ring would bolt up to the carrier, so the only fitment issue would be if the carriers were not the same width between the vehicles. In other words, are the overall length of the carriers the same from carrier bearing to carrier bearing?

The 4x4 has NO carrier bearing !

What are you referring to?

Sorry if I am confused...

This is what im talking about. Are the distances there the same between the vehicles in the article, or do only the ring and pinions fit? If they are the same, then it should be possible to get a spool or LSD for one of the other vehicles to stick in the front. I have seen factory torsion style LSD's for the S2000 go for about $170 on ebay. [Linked Image]

This is a good question, and one I was wondering about a bit back. I was running through the ARB Air Locker application listings, scanning the shaft diameters vs spline count. I found that model RD110 has a 28.8mm shaft diameter application and 28 spline count, which is dang close to the rear on the later 1st gen Sporty (29mm; 28 spline). My thought then was the same. How does the length of the unit compare to the Kia? Bolt pattern would matter too, but maybe new holes could be drilled on our ring gear, offset from the current ones.

there would be a lot more then spline dia and count. bearing dia bearing width, final gear output, maybe spine depth, bearing surface on thge LSD to the bearing vs bearing surface on the carrier housing. and so on and so on. pressed on bearings and or vs play on this and that have to be right on or binding stress or play will burn up fast.

I agree bombardj1. But looking at that article, it would seem that since the ring and pinion are a direct swap from the sportage to the s2000, there is a good chance that the carrier is the same in both vehicles, with the differences being in how the external housing is made.

Granted, I've never seen the under parts of an s2000, so im not even sure that the rear axles on one spline into the carrier. It may be like a BMW, which has "hubs" (for lack of a better term) on the differential that the axles bolt to.

hey 357 is the s2000 for the front of the sportage or the rear? the reg. front diff lsd is different from the rear lsd sporty

I believe the S2000 fits the front of the Sportage, just like the Mazda Miata and RX7 units.

this is what I thought also front not rear,

most LSD look the same, it don't mean it's gonna fit looks only matter when you see a hot chick, a few .001's of a inch off will matter on bearing s and other dia.

thinking about modifying a lock right to fit but i need to know axle size and spline (i think u guys said 28) any way i have a 28 spline mini spool for a ford 9 wondering if that will fit not that i would want to lock it full time but the burn outs would be awesome
