quick question *** big problem now **** - 02/11/10 03:03 AM

hey qiuck question , my gf was using my truck and she called me said it wouldnt start , You put key in and the lights would go off but no start . (this happened before and only thing i could find then was a ecm fuse in the yellow fuse holder under the hood , replaced that and it fired up ) so this time checked the fuse box under the hood and to my surprise the yellow fuse holder (im guessin ecm ) was not there but the cover was snapped shut , I found the fuse in the battery tray .So the big qquestion , will this truck start without ecm fuse ?( i was drunk when i thought i fixed it before i may have left it out) my gf didnot go under the hood so im suspecting foul play , can anyone chime in ?

step 1= save getting drunk for after fix celebration,or slowly work your way there, so by the time your sloshed, your done.
step 2= never let you girlfriend drive your car.

ok enough flamin.

my sport quit on highway on me.towed it home was about to crack open valve cover for timing belt replacement.then i thought "i better make sure" opened oil fill hole had wife turn key and the rockers and cam lobes were turning? so now im confused. i pull cover off fuse box lid by battery, notice a regular looking fuse kind of sticking up.so i push it down and here something begin to whine. (for once it wasnt the wife)that whining was my fuel pump.sucker started right up.
im at work cant check which one. i think it said main power or something.
you will not find a better source for sport info.give the other guys time to hit the page.

if you think foul play point a web cam at truck. i would have to cause bodily harm to someone for that one.just kidding.not. i would pity the fool

id send my wife out there to whine at him,he'd probably kill hisself. ive just opted to going to the indoor shooting range twice a week with no hearing protection.

Re: quick question - 02/11/10 01:42 PM

may have found issue , on a site they suggestion check ground on battery due to the fact the lights and radio and fan shut off when u try to start it ,the negative post was able to turn with a 1 nut try so i tighened that , but the negative cable that connect to the post was pretty loose it took a full 3 turns of my socket to tighten it , does this sound plausible ? gf still takin it to a family shop to get checked out what wanted ur take on it

Re: quick question - 02/11/10 03:16 PM

I was in italy when I had the same damn problem you did.
If I would bounce around in the cab and/or push the truck around violently from the roof rack then the damn thing would start. What the???
I had my vehicle hauled for $150 from the side of the road to the nearest english speaking guys shop. The guy laughed his ass off when I described everything to him. The english speaking mechanic popped the hood, took a wrench out of his back pocket and proceeded to torque down the clamp on the negative terminal. Then the damn thing turned over. I was so embarrassed. The dude didn't charge me for the 10 second job. Thank god... I took the vehicle home and took the terminal cables off and scrubbed the crap out of them with a brush and torqued the fu--ers down tight. No issues after that.
Initially the cables were on tight, but not tight enough; I guess. Now I always clean and check the terminals first when I have electricity problems.

Re: quick question - 02/11/10 05:25 PM

It definately is possible that the negative battery cable was the issue. when starting the car, a large load is put on the battery and cables, so if there is a loose connection, or corroded connection, it may intermittantly not start. To answer your original question though, no the vehicle will not start if the ECU has no power. The ecu controls fuel injection as well as spark, and timing. No fuel, no spark, no start.

I put a new battery in my Sportage the other day because the one in there was on the way out and I didn't want to get stuck trying to push start it on the ice around here. Cleaned the cable terminals off with Hoppes No. 9 solvent and a paper towel, I was amazed at how shiny the terminals ended up after about 2 seconds of work.

Re: quick question - 02/13/10 12:10 AM

I read this thread like four times already.....Was it the starter then?????

After I got a new alarm put in aproxx 4 days later, My truck did the same thing (would not start)....No crank or anything!

I called the alarm gurus to come and meet me at the parking lot ....and after a lengthy investigation they decided that it was not their fault.

It ended up being the Starter after all.

I also bought a new battery for nothing (well, not really for nothing)

I do agree that the posts being not soundly cleaned would be my first guess...and then the fuses....ETC...

Well, Good luck!

Re: quick question - 02/13/10 01:27 AM

I had an alarm start problem, was starter disable relay, could as well happen in a newer car. Like fuel pump relay. Some might have starter relay. But have also had starter problem. Doesn't sound too bad price with labor. If it's fixed. Also had the battery cable it'self bad. Jeesh.
