Re: info for the lsd 97 sporty with front rear lsd locker lifted - 03/25/11 11:16 PM

all work welded done by me jennifer..look i know its not a full locker but its better than a open diff and will get you just as far as most trucks and not get stuck for the most part. the kia sportage can have some kind of better trackion now... with lsd..
the front is a lsd off the RX7 87 2nd gen with big axle
rear is the same. they both fit front and rear of the 97 sporty.
the rx7 has 2 axle types for the 1st and 2nd gen 1 is the smaller axle this is the 1st gen rx7 this don't fit.. the other is the larger one this is the 2nd gen rx7 that fits the 95-97 sporty's not sure on other year sporty's if its the same 3rd member im sure it will fit as well

remember depends on the year of sporty as well this will fit that i know 95-97 kia sportage 2.0 dohc and sohc

there are tons of locker types LSD's for the RX7 on ebay
Mazda RX-7 LSD (Late - '86-88 gxl)
here is the fit:::
86-88 gxl RX7 and miata non turbo

N/A limited Slips = 7" ring gear this one fits the sporty

86 Sport - clutch type

86-88 GXL non turbo - Clutch type <--------- fits kia sportage

88 GTU - Clutch type

89-90 GTUs - Viscous type

KAAZ and Mazdaspeed also have nice lsd's and some ebay ones THE UNIT WILL ALLOW FULL LOCK OF BOTH REAR WHEELS WHEN THROTTLE IS ON AND OFF

All turbos came with a limited slip but 8" ring gear will not fit the kia sporty.
the 7" ring gear fit perfect same size axle spline and bearings and all bolts in put your gear on and set back lash then ur done ready to go..

if you want to see the lsd in action ill post a vid here and youtube were going out to browns camp sat.. for mud and rocks to test out. the 4x4

Re: 97 sporty with front rear locker lifted - 03/26/11 09:07 PM

How well do the lockers work for slow rock crawling? Some of the RX7 limited slips I have reserched say they need a lot of wheel speed to engage. I have a stock sportage rear LS that will be going in next week end, I have an extra front 3rd member waiting for the right locker.

Thanks, Dennis

Re: 97 sporty with front rear locker lifted - 03/28/11 12:14 AM

i got told the same with lsd tons of wheel spin to lock but it did great better than i thought it locks with about 1200rpm and a real small amount of wheel spin like few spins then locks it work really great climbing nasty wet clay hill
im happy very happy with it.way better than open and one step closer for the hard to fined parts for a sporty.

How many Horses you pushin out now with all that?

Have you had any issues with the 3 stage clutch at all?

This is quite the rig you have built up.
To bad it isn't a 2001 then I would be doing everything you did!

Jen,

Thanks for the info on your Sportage and the front LSD you are using. As soon as I can find one I'm going to put it in. I'd like to have the gear type instead of the clutch, but something is better than nothing. Do you have a P/N on the clutch you used? I need to put in a clutch and would love any info you have and observations so I can compare it to others.

definitely want to know more info on the turbo set up including any ecm mods and sensor mods etc.

as for the people that the info on the lsd's would help, would there not be a way to adjust the lsd as to when it would activate? a good question for a driveline shop perhaps.

To anyone who reads this thread and gets the impression that the Mazda LSDs for the non-turbo RX-7 or Miata (both with 7" ring gear) will fit in BOTH the FRONT and REAR carriers of the '95-'97 sportages, THIS IS ABSOLUTELY FALSE. I have pulled the parts and done the comparisons, to include the fitment of an OBX LSD spec'd for the '94-'05 Miata. These differentials will fit in the front carrier. THEY WILL NOT FIT THE REAR - unless you can figure out how to set up the rear carrier with a 7" ring and pinion (the pinion, carrier bearings and spacing are the same: only the diameter of the ring gear and ring gear mount differ in the rear, that being 7.5", vice the 7" found in the front end). But reducing the ring gear diameter does not make for a stronger rear differential...

After reading this and other threads, I was mislead to believe there was compatibility - that the 7.5" ring gear would mount. It will not. See for yourself...

Let the myth be dispelled... forever!!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />

See, I'm not crazy! I did a lot of research on that years ago and all the posts made me start to doubt what I read, thanks for the info, it could save someone lots of time and money.
