oil leak under pressure. - 10/07/11 01:08 PM

so, i thought it was the oil filter mount o rings. replaced those. nope. it's ok, as in doesn't leak much at all when sitting. once i start it, oil starts dripping.. what could it be? replaced the cylinder cover gasket too. maybe the o-ring on the back of the head? ideas anyone?? i really don't want to do a rear main on this...

Could be alot of things, lol. Start it up, crawl under there and look where it's roughly dripping from.. front, rear, driver's, passenger's side. of the block.

Well.. maybe the back of valve cover or the exhaust cam position sensor o-ring which is on the rear of the valve cover.. hard to see since it's between the motor and firewal, but i know mine's leakin. I just have no motivation to fix it cause it's not real bad and I'm losing more oil past the oil rings :P`

Hello.

As mentioned above- behind the cam cover- between the engine and the fire wall- there is an O ring aroud one of the sensors- it breaks and leaks under pressure.

the annoying thing is that oil drips down- so u think that the problem is in the block area- when in fact the leak is from the upper part of the engine.

so -

wait for the sporty to cool down and thes simply insert your hand and touch the rear of the engine- behind the cams - when the O ring goes it usually leaks a ton of oil-so u will be able to feel and see the oil.

p"s - check your oil level - if u drive like that for a week you can loose a lot of oil - leading to damage to the cams.

i have a miata and it has the same sensor. just never leaked THAT bad. it's not registered or insured yet so it's not being driven.. guess i'll go snag an o ring at the store. they are like 50 cents.. instead of $5 at the dealer.. ugh. and i just replaced the valve cover gasket. i knew i should have done the cas o ring at the same time.. oh well, at least i know where to look and what i'm doing.. thanks guys.

I wanna say it's a bit easier to remove if you take off the valve cover and then there's two bolts to take out the sensor. 10mm socket i'm sure. I think there's two rings in there. I'll maybe check my spare motor cause it's sitting out but it's in the garage (detached)

yeah, which is why i'm upset at myself.. i've replaced the one on my miata about 3 times now and i knew it right when i saw it. i thought to myself nah. i should replace it, but i didn't have one on hand.. and now everything i did two weeks ago will have to be done again. thanks for checking if you can!

oh yeah, should be two 12mm on the back there, plus the one holding the CAS onto the head, which should be a 12mm also.

The 98 we just bought has a leak (when we got it)...I crawled under it while running and it appears to be coming from the base of the oil cooler adapter/oil filter mount. Is there a gasket or o-ring there? Is this a common place for a leak?

It is a pretty solid drip when running but not at all if the engine is not running. You seem to indicate your thoughts are it is at or near the filter which is right above this area so you might want to double check for this.

yes, that is an extremely common leak. i just replaced the TWO o-rings that go inside the adapter. i may have just not tightened the nuts down enough as one is extremely difficult to access.

i see two things. A; there are two bolts holding it to the head, like you said. and B; how the heck do you get this thing outta the head with it in the truck???
