Front axle bearings 2WD replacement, 2001 - 05/28/15 06:06 AM

I need to replace the front bearings, does anyone have the steps on how to do this? plus torque settings etc.

Here's a link to a parts diagram for a 2WD front hub assembly. The assembly is the same design as a 4WD, less the front half-shaft and locking hub.

You'll have to pop off the dust cap and see what kind of hardware they used on the 2WD to hold it all together. Most every other 2WD axle I've seen used a castle nut with a cotter pin. But the diagram looks different. I know my 4WD hub has 2 screws that hold the locking nut in position. Didn't see the screws on that diagram. But the setup may be the same.

As far as replacing the bearings, you'll need to pull the hub off and clean out the grease. You'll find 4 openings in the race stops behind each bearing race (inner and outer). You'll need to walk out the old races by tapping around the back of the race at the slots. Do this for the outer and inner. Replace the bearings and races together so they'll wear properly. Once you have the old races out, set a new race in position and tap it into place without getting it "wonky". If you have a press with a sleeve the same diameter as the race, then you can go that route. But the old shade tree approach of tapping around the circle works fine if you walk it in gently.

Once the races are set, pack the new bearings with grease and reassemble. The manual for my '97 says to tighten the lock nut until 10 pounds of pulling force applied to a wheel stud is required the break the hub into rotation (breakaway force... sorry for being so freekin' wordy ). The diagram in the manual shows it being tested with a fish scale. Once you have it there or close and with no detectable play in the hub/bearings, lock it down, replace the dust cap and call it done.

That's it in a nutshell...

it does have that weird locking nut, no cotter pin, after it's set you tap the edge of the nut into the grove on the spindle.
