Re: ball joint recall - 07/16/05 03:31 PM

I found this on Toyota's site:

http://www.toyotaownersonline.com/news/articles.php?id=10

Service Campaign Set for Some '01-'04 Truck and SUV Models
Publication Date: 05/31/2005
On certain 2001 2002 Model Year 4Runner, 2001 2004 Model Year Tacoma 4WD and PreRunner, and 2002 2004 Model Year Sequoia and Tundra vehicles, there is a possibility that the Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint may experience excessive wear and looseness causing increased steering effort, reduced vehicle self-centering, and noise in the front suspension. If the vehicle is continued to be operated in this condition, in extreme cases, the lower ball joint may separate from the knuckle causing a loss of vehicle steering control.

This new Special Service Campaign (SSC) will be launched in late June, 2005. Owners of the involved vehicles will receive a SSC notification by first class mail beginning in late June, 2005. The owner notification will be completed around December, 2005. Toyota dealers will replace the left and right Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint at NO CHARGE to the vehicle owners.

Re: ball joint recall - 07/16/05 06:40 PM

I've allready replaced mine. When I put my truck back together I decided to go ahead and replace the ball joints. The mechanic told me it was only the lower ball joints that were going to be recalled.

Re: ball joint recall - 07/17/05 09:35 PM

my upper ball joints seem to be greasy on the outside, like if it got torn. Or is this like normal?

OK here is a question someone may know ... if you bought the 'yota used, or if you have moved since buying it, how does Toyota know your contact info?

Re: ball joint recall - 07/20/05 12:12 AM

They get the mailing info from where you purchase your tags and registration. or that is what i have been told

Re: ball joint recall - 07/20/05 08:12 AM

Contact the Toyota Regional Center where you are now, with your VIN, and where you bought the vehicle from, so they can get you in the database. We went thru this with the roomie's Corolla. Her DFW maintenance records had to be transferred to our regional area here.

The mailout campaign is supposed to run thru December.

The dealer actually called me up and set up an appointment for me last week, That was definetly good customer service! Anyhow, I had mine replaced last week and an alignment of course! That was pretty quick I thought and a good dealer!

Aaack! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />

Got my recall letter today... Guess I'm one of the lucky ones. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Considering it's only a ball joint it's doubtful, but does anyone know if the replacement involves a re-alignment?

What state do you live in?

Re: ball joint recall - 10/31/05 06:21 PM

They reset the toe-in and camber after replacing the ball joints. They don't reference off the rear axle, though.

I'm in Indiana. Does that make a difference on what gets performed on the recall?

Re: ball joint recall - 11/08/05 05:00 PM

got my recall notice yesterday. Has the dealer been giving a hard time to anyone with lifts?
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: ball joint recall - 11/17/05 04:21 AM

I just got my 03 back from the dealer,The recall replaced both ball joints and aligned it. I was told that if a lift was used, It will not be repaired. For some folks, I hope that is not true. I just ordered my lift, after the work was done. good luck.

Re: ball joint recall - 11/17/05 10:08 PM

Just call your dealer - no recall notice needed! Brought my runner in to have them done and left with an 06 taco - beware. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

This better not be true. I'm calling today to have the work done. should I mention that I have a lift? Or just drive it in and see what they say?

Re: ball joint recall - 11/19/05 09:02 AM

It's always better to find another dealer than to try to argue for coverage. Not all service writers are the same <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Re: ball joint recall - 11/21/05 04:31 AM

Donno about the lift thingy, but heres a tidbit of info that might console ya'll.

(Incidentally, I just had the operation done at my Eureka CA dealership, and Im very pleased with this place.... )anyway... shop mgr I spoke with tld me theyve done 30-40 of these recall jobs so far, and after analylizing parts replaced, havent fount a set yet that was bad....

Re: ball joint recall - 11/22/05 05:48 AM

The dealership here in Indy, IN told me today that any lift voids all factory suspension warranties! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/shame.gif" alt="" /> He was a little rude about it too!

My replacement took 2 hours from handing them them the keys to getting them back! I think they did a tire rotation too, but didn't charge me for it.

When I went in this morning I checked my headlights against the garage door, when I got my truck back from the dealership my drivers side headlight was out??? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Re: ball joint recall - 11/30/05 06:08 PM

I just made my appointment at my local dealer for the recall work. I told them I had a lift, and they said no problem. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

they also said they've been doing 3 or 4 of these a day and have yet to find a defective part. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />
Posted By: Mark in AZ

Re: ball joint recall - 11/30/05 10:30 PM

The recall was for a 'scratch' on the surface of the ball (if I remember correctly) so unless they disassemble them I doubt they would even know how many were 'defective'. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />

Re: ball joint recall - 03/02/06 06:23 PM

I've been procrastinating. I'm leery about going to a dealer for repairs since a friend of mine whom was a service manager told me every dealership he's worked at, there have been mechanics who sabotage vehicles so they return for repair (replace something with worn out parts, etc) - it's their bread and butter. I have a 2002 runner with 80,000 miles with no steering issues. Do you guys advise I take it in? Hearing earlier on this thread, "after analylizing parts replaced, havent found a set yet that was bad" furthers my procrastination.

Re: ball joint recall - 03/28/06 01:44 AM

I'm still debating, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I was wrong about my mileage. I have 69,000 but steering feels brand new. * called toyoter in Vancouver. They said there is no expiration date. I'm wondering if I should just wait until they are worn but then again it could cause my tires to wear out of alignment - ok, new tires so I might as well go do it.

Re: ball joint recall - 04/03/06 05:42 PM

I hadn't heard from the dealer from whom I purchased my '04 Tacoma, so I called them today. He ran the VIN and said this campaign did not apply to my truck (it doesn't apply to all VINs).

Is he blowing smoke, or have others had the same experience?
Posted By: Anonymous

Re: ball joint recall - 04/06/06 12:15 AM

Probably blowing the biggest smoke ever. I got a recall notice for my 04 truck several months ago, but I havent taken it in. I'll wait until I get my cornfed spacers in a few weeks then take it in so I can get the thing aligned.

Re: ball joint recall - 04/06/06 01:58 AM

If in doubt, contact the regional Toyota folks for your area; you can find their contact information via Toyota's website. Remember these are being made in more than one plant in the US now.

Got my recall last week. Haven't set up an appointment to get it done yet.

Re: ball joint recall - 04/23/06 05:25 AM

I got my recall a month ago. A week after one of the ball joints popped out and I replaced it. The dealer told me that the lift wasn't a problem. If you haven't done it get it done. You don't want to be driving down the highway when one of those joints gives out.

Does this recall include 2003 AWD Highlanders?
Posted By: lynchknot

Re: ball joint recall - 05/25/06 12:06 AM

I was parked a couple days ago and upon leaving and steering I heard a knock from the front end and noticed my 4X4 indicator flashing and my cruise control not working (light for cruise ok but not flashing) Seems to steer fine but going to take it in the morning. I wonder if this problem would relate to my truck's symptoms.

Call Toyota and have your VIN handy.

Re: ball joint recall - 07/13/06 06:09 AM

How come my truck(2000 tacoma) doesn't fall under this recall!? Last week driving down the street at 30mph my driverside lower ball joint snapped right off and sent my truck sliding on the frame and lower suspension. Luckily I didn't hit anything. The part failed, therefore toyota should be responsible. I STRONGLY RECOMEND REPLACING BOTH SIDES! I got about 130K mi on my tacoma.

Re: ball joint recall - 07/17/06 06:37 AM

Recalls are based on what is reported to be faulty up to a certain percentile of vehicles. If your local dealership won't give you a satisfactory answer, then a call to the regional office is in order; have your VIN handy, be calm, take pictures, and find out if the recall has been expanded to include your vehicle. You should be able to find the regional Toyota service center for your area via Toyota's website.

The particulars of this recall can be found in our Toyota tech archive; make sure you expand your viewing selection to see it (lower left of screen there).

Glad you weren't hurt; good luck!

Ok, I've checked with 3 different dealers in 2 different states and each one says my truck is not part of the recall. This does not appply to all VIN's...........

Re: ball joint recall - 09/15/06 06:36 AM

Does not apply to all Tacoma's, My neighbor Tacoma extra cab, same year as my dbl cab did not apply either. I got mine done months ago!! now I'm ready for a 2" lift if I can find one that is reliable.

It appears Toyota has excellent traceability of which truck serial numbers have the defective ball joints <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Hey guys, how would you know that the dealers have replaced them after you brought your trucks in. I am scheduling to have mine done next Monday.

Re: ball joint recall - 10/05/06 11:43 PM

Brought my truck in last Monday, it took an hour of labor. Could not tell the work has been done at all?

Re: ball joint recall - 10/06/06 01:59 AM

Run your VIN with them; should show up.

Did you read your invoice? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Re: ball joint recall - 12/30/06 07:28 PM

I think he just wants to know how you can prove the work is actually done. Put some fingernail polish on the old one.

I had my ball joints replaced on my T-100 and it was obvious the work was done, because everything looked new. I can see on a newer vehicle it may be difficult to determine if the work was done.

Have a great New Year,

Brad

Re: ball joint recall - 01/03/07 10:50 AM

Okay, it's more like--tell them you want them to keep the old parts, so you can inspect them. I go so far as to turn the worksheet my direction to write that information on there myself as a lady customer.
