4x4wire was started (IIRC) because the old vmag forum was not so... 'effective'.

Management & the current mods pick any new mod's.

Oh yes. Mods get paid in the heaps of adoration and good behavior of our forum members... The raise schedule is a little shaky though...

John, wasn't the original site Outdoor Wire?

I was invited to moderate by Little Joe a few years ago quite the shocker.

Wasn't scarcely 13 years ago we'd all be tearing our hair out trying to fix our rigs; now look at all the great (and not-so-great) info available to us out there.

That's a big wow factor for a kid and next to nothing for tools.

Re: 4x4 wire - 07/30/09 04:52 AM

The selection of moderators is usually a collegial activity by the incumbent moderators. Sometimes it is the moderators for the specific forum, sometimes it is the moderators of the site as a group.

In the case of the addition of a new forum, such as this OT Forum, volunteers were solicited from the group of existing moderators.

When a moderator finds it necessary to resign, a decision is made as to whether or not there are enough moderators for the forum to proceed without a replacement.

Re: 4x4 wire - 07/30/09 05:11 AM

The "official" name is still OutdoorWire.

We did a shift at one point to capitalize on the popularity of 4x4; hence, the focus is 4x4Wire.com. That proved to be a good thing.

While the site can be accessed through outdoorwire.com, there is a new kid on the block titled "theoutdoorwire.com" that is focused on hunting activities.

I have 4x4wire stickers. PM me with an address.

I came here back in 01' after I sold my CRX and got a 96 4Runner. I've met lots of great people over the years.

Anyone in the Cincinnati/NKY area who wants a 4x4wire sticker, feel free to PM me and I can give you one in person.

One thing I love about this forum is how well it works. Everybody is friendly, and we just all get along. And there arent a bunch of stupid posts asking stupid questions here. Everyone just seems to "get it"

My buddy asked the sheriff when he got his truck about the wheels sticking out and he said as long as it wasn't over 10 feet wide. I'm right at 7.

In early 1999, some staffers from off-road.com got alienated with that site and started planning 4x4Wire. AFAIK it was Randy Burleson, David Gray, and Terry Howe; and they pulled in Scott Wilson, Jim Brink, and some other fellows whose names I forget now.

They quietly launched outdoorwire.com in July 1999. The original concept was for outdoorwire.com to be a big umbrella for outdoor activities: ATV, motorcycles, sand, MTB, 4x4, etc.

Since their core was 4x4 and their names had cachet and ORC was undergoing some issues, a lot of 4x4 people came here with them.

The official launch was New Year's Day, 2000.

The outdoorwire.com concept never gathered any momentum, however the 4x4Wire side was very energetic and active.

This site has definitely been through ups and downs. There were times staffers were coughing up their cash to pay the bills, we've seen a lot of contributors (and contributions) ebb and flow, there have been forum schisms, leadership changes, philosophical changes, etc.

All in all, the site has done a good job for 10 years now. It's always been run by enthusiasts whose only agenda is providing a community and information for other enthusiasts.

HTH.
