Jeep fender flares, more harm than good?

Jeep fender flares, more harm than good? - 02/27/07 11:28 PM

1998 Cherokee Sport.
Long story short, ripped one of my fender flares off wheeling and rather than fix it figured I'd start pulling them off and see whats under there.

I'm guessing there was about five pounds of sand, dirt rocks and crap under them.
The paint was scratched where the plastic rests on the metal and a nice film of green mold was growing on the wet sand trapped under the flares.

Removing the decade old bolts from the brackets sucked,1/2 of them broke and the previous weekend of wheeling mud had dried to a nice hard crust.

Do Wranglers and Grand Cherokees come with the same factory dirt storage units?

HA HA!
Reminds me of wearing ski goggles while blasting around the woods in my dads old FJ40 with the windshield down.
That was some fun wheelin, thanks Jim. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

i dont know what your local laws are regarding tires outside the flares, and im not sure about the real answer to your question, but i have seen people modify a wranglers rear flares to fit on all 4 corners of the cherokees. it offers more coverage when going with larger tires, and it looks almost stock. i believe you can fit a larger tire in the well with them too if you trim out the sheetmetal a bit.

This isnt one of the cleanest installs i've seen.

this is a better install of the TJ flare onto the XJ.

i love this mod and will be doing it soon, as one of my members wants to do tube fenders and said he would give me his old stockers.

here is a good website that will walk you through the "how to" of installing TJ flares onto your xj (gives you lots more tire clearance too!)

If there is a fender law in WA it's not enforced, most of the 4x4's around have tires sticking out past the fenders.

Fortunatly my tires don't stick out. Planning on going to a 5.5" lift this summer and trimming the fenders for 33"tires.
Hoping to find a good 33x9.5 mud terrain to maintain the narrow profile.

When I lived in WA, the law was the tires couldn't stick out more that 2" past the flares. In southern WA, it was enforced. As were mudflaps.
